The 2007 Shelby Mustang GT500
by Dennis Begley

Wonders of all things, there is a new Ford Mustang carrying a Shelby Mustang serial number available the summer of 2006. Considering all the pseudo Shelby Mustangs available now, this should be of no surprise. Where there is a Shelby on the name plate, someone is going after the market. Regardless of your personal opinion on whether a new Shelby Mustang should be offered or even is this a real Shelby Mustang, this is one awesome car. This may be the ultimate Mustang ever built by Ford.

So where did this idea come from? Pretty obvious there is a feeding frenzy on classic Shelby Mustangs. The market value of these cars are taking them out of the reach of most enthusiasts. When a car hits six figures you might call it a highly valued collector's item. Its pretty amazing to see the price for those Eleanor clones with a "Shelby" serial number. Can you image paying $75000+ for an old Mustang restomoded that happens to have the Shelby number. As a long time classic Shelby Mustang owner, I am not alone is saying I have a little trouble acknowledging those cars as "Shelby Mustangs". Money talks, huh?

Anyway, back to the new Shelby Mustang 2007 version. It is the only SVT Mustang offered. Based on the Mustang GT, the designers at Ford offered some special tweaks. How about 450 horsepower and 450 lb.-ft. of torque, 14" Brembo disc brakes in the front & 13" in the rear, 255/45ZR high-performance tires in front and 285/40ZR high-performance tires in back., wheels are 18 inches by 9.5 inches alloy wheels,  MacPherson strut independent front suspension with Reverse L lower control arms, a solid-axle, three-link rear suspension with coil springs and a Panhard rod for precise control of the rear axle and a price that will be in line with that of the previous Mustang Cobra models. Project designers at Ford say the 2006 Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra GT500 "will be the most powerful production Mustang ever built."

Utilizing the new Mustang platform, the cosmetics of this car are based on the 1968 Shelby Cobra Mustang. The only thing missing are the side scoops. The front of the new car more than resembles the '68. And the rear sports the subtle tail spolier.

In anticipation of a huge demand for these special cars, many dealers listed their cars on EBay. Actually what they put on EBay was not the car but an chance to purchase their car. People were bidding $20,000+ for the chance to purchase one of these cars. That puts the combined price over $55,000. A deal at twice the price, right?
