Where do they excel?

Another area where they perform well…

Hankook is a Korean tire maker that makes its tires in Indonesia. They are not so well known outside of Asia, but they have earned a good reputation for making high-quality tires. They are now looking to expand their range and enhance their standing with the Dynapro ATM.
So, are they any good?
These all-terrain tires do a lot of things well, although don’t excel in any particular area. It strikes a good balance between on and off-road driving. If you want a tire for an even split of driving styles, then it’s a good choice.
The tread is not overly aggressive but deep enough to perform well off-road. They handle reasonably well in wet weather and give acceptable levels of grip and handling. However, it’s fair to say there are better tires. Although, there are worse too.
Less precise directional changes and the lack of lateral stability under hard braking. They feel a little twitchy in comparison to some premium and better-known brands. These are not deal-breaking traits but need to be kept in mind for those involved in heavy off-roading.
The treads give them a good bite over muddy and wet ground. They also drive well over rocky terrain. The tires feel slightly soft but still gives you grip and a feeling of confidence. They feel marginally better in these conditions than a lot of other tires in this category and price point.
When you’re on the highway, they’re quieter than a lot of tires due to the less aggressive tread pattern. These are tires you could live with for some very relaxed long drives. In short, these are solid performers in just about any condition.

So, let’s take a look at their on-road performance…
On smooth tarmac, it would be easy to think you were booted with a set of normal road tires. They run smoothly with very little noise. Even at high cruising speeds, they have the refined manners of something with much fewer off-road design features.
And their off-road performance?
They perform best on hard-packed surfaces and also very well in the wet and light snow. Where things are not so positive is over rocky surfaces and in the mud. In very soft going, they lack traction, and the treads quickly become clogged, leading to poor performance.
All of this is no great surprise as the tread is not overly aggressive. Consequently, the tires are aimed at drivers who encounter less challenging off-roading conditions. Here, they provide more than sufficient grip and traction to warrant serious consideration.

These tires also have indents in the tread for fitting studs to give an even more epic grip. If you decide to fit studs, you should first check with the laws in your local area to ensure they’re legal.
In the wet…
They afford excellent handling and stopping ability. Many all-terrain tires struggle in wet conditions, but not so with the General Grabber. So much so that driving in either the dry or wet can be perceived to be close to identical.
The tread has five differently shaped rows of blocks. These are deep and give excellent grip, and are excellent over loose gravel and even sand. They’re tough too, and will take a lot of punishment to the sidewalls when they come into contact with rocky surfaces.
Relatively refined and quiet on the highway. Even if you predominantly do highway mileage, they could still be a good choice for your truck or SUV, especially since they look super-cool too.
There’s not much to complain about. However, tread life could be better. These tires have a typical life of around 40,000 miles. Not up to the heady 60,000 miles of some more aggressively treated all-terrain tires. Never the less there’s still plenty to like.

Pirelli is not a name that is instantly associated with all-terrain tires. Much like Bridgestone, they specialize more in manufacturing road tires.
However, with the explosion of SUV and truck sales in recent years, they’ve become increasingly involved with making all-terrain and off-road tires, and they’ve got pretty good at it.
Great in a variety of conditions…
The latest version of the Scorpion All Terrain Tire looks very different from the outgoing model. It’s thicker, chunkier, and has a visually aggressive tire tread. This is a more durable, tougher, and all-around better-performing tire off-road.
Over loose surfaces, mud, and gravel, they are noticeably improved. You get plenty of grips even when the ground underneath is soft or wet. Plus, there’s stability through corners and plenty of responsiveness to quick changes of direction.
What about snowy weather?
Although they don’t have the same ability in the snow and ice as the General Grabber, they can still be relied upon in all but heavy snow. This is in part down to the grooves in the tread.
They contain conical-shaped stone ejectors, which help to clear snow as well as mud and debris. Wide lateral notches also help to evacuate large volumes of water, making them a good choice in the wet.
On the road…
They maintain a lot of the characteristics of a Pirelli road tire. You get good handling, good braking distances, and loads of grip on even slippery corners. Thankfully, they’re quiet too.
Treadwear is high for tires that perform so well on the road. You get a limited warranty up to 50,000 miles. Some tires are longer wearing, but the Pirellis are pretty good.

Tougher than the rest…
It’s constructed using CoreGuard technology which creates a tough bruise, highly puncture-resistant, extended, and thickened sidewall. The increased level of protection covers a much greater area where critical sidewall failure occurs. As a result, these are some of the most durable all terrain tires out there.
The extra protection continues on the tread that is made up form a special formula to reduce chips and tears from rocks and debris. All in all, we believe this is the toughest tire on our list and a great choice if you frequently run over rocky and challenging surfaces.
No slipping or sliding…
Traction over the loose ground, soft mud, and even in the snow is excellent. The tires have deep-seated ejectors that clean out stones as well as any accumulated debris. That ensures you maintain grip and traction at all times.

More aggressive tread and deeper tread patterns will generally result in better traction and better grip through corners over any piece of ground. However, the biggest challenge for most tires, other than snow and ice, is when driving through soft and muddy terrain.
For tires to maintain traction in these circumstances, they need to be designed to evacuate stones, dirt, and mud from the tire to maintain grip. This also helps in shedding water. One of the best in these kinds of circumstances is the Hankook Dynapro ATM.
Performance in Snow and Ice

Generally speaking, the more aggressive the tire and the more set up it is for off-road use, the worse it will perform on the open road. Aggressive tread patterns are excellent in the forests.
