Best Bicycle Tool Kits On The Market Review And Buying Guide

1 Crankbrothers Mini Bike Tools Multi 19 Tool Black +Case

The Crankbrothers multi-tool is something you’re most likely to carry around with you on your rides. It’s a set of emergency tools to make a roadside repair and get back you on your way. However, for a few minor maintenance and repairs jobs, it could still be used at home.

The multi-tool has seven hex keys, four screwdrivers, a Torx 25, a spoke key, and two open wrenches. All necessities in case of a breakdown. But even better is also has a chain splitter — an often overlooked tool.

Built to be tough enough…

The tools offer very fair quality for the price. They’re made from 6150 Hi-Ten Steel and are tough enough to tackle most jobs. No complaints here.

The frame is made from hardened aluminum alloy. It’s a great choice of material as it keeps the weight right down to just 175 g. All the more impressive since a chain-splitter is also included. No complaints here either.

Looks nice, but…

The multi-tool comes with a smart, hard case that adds another 40 g to the total weight. It looks great but, in our opinion, it’s a case of unnecessary weight. Pun intended!

The bottom line is that it’s a useful tool for your rides, though is unlikely to replace your home tools for regular maintenance. It just doesn’t have the same kind of strength as dedicated garage and workshop tools. However, it’s still a useful addition to a larger home tool collection.

Our rating:4.7 out of 5 stars (4.7 / 5)

Pros

  • Good tool selection.
  • Strong construction.
  • Chain splitter included.
  • Low weight.

Cons

  • Hex keys work loose in the frame.

2 WOTOW 16 in 1 Multi-Function Bike Bicycle Cycling Mechanic Repair Tool Kit with 3 pcs Tire Pry Bars Rods

This has enough tools to get you rolling again in most situations.

The WOTOW multi-tools are made from carbon steel and ABS. It has six hex keys that measure 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, and 6mm. There are also a Philips head and a flat-ended screwdriver. These are absolute essentials on any bike ride.

Need a socket set? No problem…

This multi-tool also has a 3-sized flat wrench and the rather unusual inclusion of an 8mm, 9mm, and 10mm socket set. Not something you see every day, even on the very best bike tool kits.

The sockets are held in place within the tools folding end. Even when you use the other tools. Once the end is snapped shut, you don’t have to worry that they’ll fall out.

Comprehensive but heavy…

The biggest niggle we have is that it weighs a rather portly 10 ounces. A lot of the weight is because of the socket set. Frankly, this is a lot of extra metal. For any weight weenies searching for some lightweight options, you’re going to have to look elsewhere for a tool that’s not quite so comprehensive.

The WOTOW tool also has three tire levers, and a spoke key. There’s even an extra hex key to keep the ends of the tool’s frame nice and tight.

WOTOW 16 in 1 Multi-Function Bike Bicycle Cycling Mechanic Repair Tool Kit

Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Pros

  • Good quality.
  • 3-sized open-ended wrench.
  • Three socket wrenches.
  • Good hex key selection.

Cons

  • It’s heavy.

3 GUSODOR Bicycle Repair Bag Set Bike Repair Tools 7 in 1 Kits Bike Maintenance Fix Tools – Best Bicycle Tool Kit with Mini Pump

This is a basic bicycle tool kit. The main multi-tool is made of durable steel. It has five hex keys, which are 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm. The remaining two tools are a straight and a Phillips head screwdriver. The tool has enough attachments to take care of most simple emergency repairs.

Modern and lightweight…

The kit also comes with three bike tire levers and a puncture repair outfit. We like the puncture repair outfit as you don’t need to play around with glue to fix the patch onto your inner tube. We also like it because it’s one of the more modern and lightweight versions.

We’ve no problem with the tire levers. They work well enough though we always suggest only ever taking two with you on a ride. You honestly won’t need the third one. It’s just extra weight and space.

Unusual in this kind of kit is the inclusion of a minipump…

The plusses are that it’s big enough to not make inflating your tires too difficult. It’s also small enough to easily fit in the saddlebag that comes provided. What’s more, it also has a flexible hose, which makes inflation a little easier.

On the negative side, the quality is not to the same standard as the rest of the kit. The pump is likely to be the first thing that will need replacing.

A quality saddlebag…

The saddlebag, on the other hand, is probably the best part of the kit. It’s well made and has strong attaching straps for the seat post and seat rails. It’s a nice size and has plenty of room to add additional tools and a spare inner tube.

This has the basis of a great starter tool kit.

GUSODOR Bicycle Repair Bag Set Bike Repair Tools 7 in 1 Kits Bike Maintenance Fix Tools

Our rating:3.9 out of 5 stars (3.9 / 5)

Pros

  • Good puncture repair kit.
  • The pump has a flexible hose.
  • Pump suitable for Presta and Schrader valves.
  • Good quality saddlebag.

Cons

  • Low-quality pump.

4 IRONARM Best Value Professional Bicycle Tool Kit Professional Tool Kit – Best Bicycle Tool Kit for Newer Bikes

This has all the tools to meet most of your bike repair and maintenance needs. The kit has tools to help you switch out Shimano Hollowtech bottom brackets, change cassettes, pedals, chains, stems, seat posts, seats, and handlebars. Depending on the kind of bike you have, it may even be possible to strip down and build-up an entire bike.

The only two areas that would prove a stumbling block would be in removing and fitting of a press-fit bottom bracket into a carbon frame, plus, the removing and fitting of a headset. However, since the tools for both of these jobs are relatively specialized, and expensive, this is often a job that is best left to your local bike shop.

Best for newer bikes…

The overall quality of the tools is fair for the price though you shouldn’t expect anything near the same quality as Park Tools. The steel is not as hard as you’d find on top quality bike tools. If you’re working with newer bikes, these tools will do a good job. However, on older bikes, or bikes with seized parts, there’s a chance the tools will be found wanting.

The tool kit comes in a nice-looking sturdy case. Everything is well laid out and easy to find once it’s opened. We have no complaints at all about the toolbox.

Overall, this is a good kit to begin your bicycle home maintenance with.

IRONARM Best Value Professional Bicycle Tool Kit Professional Tool Kit

Our rating:3.9 out of 5 stars (3.9 / 5)

Pros

  • Good selection of tools.
  • Great value for the money.
  • Quality carrying case.
  • Includes cartridge bottom bracket tool.

Cons

  • Steel not as hard as on premium tools.

5 Park Tool IB-3 I-Beam Multi-Tool – Best Premium Bicycle Tool Kit

If you want to know what the best multi-tool looks like, then read on.

Park tools are the choice of professionals. Put your head into a local bike shop, and the mechanic’s area will almost certainly be awash with Park Tools. It’s the same story when you peek inside a mechanic’s van on the pro-tour.

So, why is this?

Well, quite simply, it’s because the quality is exceptional. Park Tools use the best of everything, which includes their choice of premium hardened steel. They are made to last and can be used on the trickiest, rustiest, and most difficult of builds.

The good news is that you can get all of this premium quality in a simple multi-tool. We should, of course, warn you that it will cost you two or three times more than most similar tools. However, we honestly think it’s worth it.

Everything you could ever need, and more…

The Park Tool IB-3 I-Beam Multi-Tool comes straight out swinging by including no less than eight different sized hex keys. This is in comparison to most other multi-tools that offer just six. They do this by adding an adaptor to the 6mm hex key that can take it to 8mm.

Plus, they drop the inclusion of a Phillips head screwdriver, only offering a flat head screwdriver, which allows the space for a 1mm hex key.

No Phillips head screwdriver, eh? So, that should go into the moans and niggles section surely?

Well, no. That’s what we thought at first. Then we got to thinking, why would Park Tools miss out something so important?

The truth is that they haven’t. After scrambling around on our new and vintage bikes, we couldn’t find a single dedicated Philips head screw. Oh! Park Tools had it right all along. All those other multi-tools have a screwdriver that’s never going to see action on a bike.

Two is better than three!

What Park Tools also have so right is the inclusion of a two spoke wrenches, a tire lever, and a chain splitter. How many times do we have to say you should always take a chain splitter out with you on your rides? And how many times do we need to say two tire levers, and not three, are just fine.

Though Park Tools have taken this a step further using just a single tire lever. That is a bit of a stretch, but it’s still doable to take off a wheel with just the one.

In short, this is well thought out, high-quality multi-tool and obviously very, highly recommended.

Park Tool IB-3 I-Beam Multi-Tool

Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros

  • Premium hardened steel.
  • Eight hex keys.
  • Two spoke spanners.
  • Chain splitter.

Cons

  • None for a multi-tool.

6 WOTOW Bike Repair Tool Kits Saddle Bag 14 in 1 Multi Function Tool Kit Chain Splitter

This multi-tool is a slightly stripped-down version than the previous WOTOW bike multi-tool we reviewed. The obvious omission is the 3-piece socket set. However, in its place, you get a separate single wrench with 10 different hole sizes. These range from 6mm up to 15mm.

In theory, this gives you more versatility and a larger range. Sadly, in practice, these wrenches are notoriously difficult to use. In more difficult to reach places they’re virtually useless.

Apart from that…

The multi-tool still has a good selection of hex key sizes, and you still get a Phillips head and a flat end screwdriver. You also get a T25 Torx key. However, there’s no extra hex key to tighten up the multi-tool frame.

This WOTOW repair kit includes a puncture repair outfit and a seat bag. The puncture outfit has a couple of tire levers, a metal rasp, and six self-adhesive patches. The previous WOTOW multi-tool didn’t include any of these useful accessories.

Simple and effective…

The seat bag is made from good quality and weatherproof material. It has a strong zip and strong Velcro attachments that fix around the seat post and the seat rails. It’s easy to fix on and easy to take off.

The cool thing about the seat bag is that it has plenty of room for the kit, along with extra room for a spare inner tube, and even a phone. Plus, there’s also a handy inner net pocket to keep your keys and money.

WOTOW Bike Repair Tool Kits Saddle Bag 14 in 1 Multi Function Tool Kit Chain Splitter

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Seat bag included.
  • Puncture repair outfit included.
  • Good selection of hex key sizes.
  • Good value for money.

Cons

  • The separate wrench is awkward to use.

7 Bike Repair Tool Kit with Car Multitool Box Wrench, Screwdriver – Accessory Kits

The Coffled bike repair tool kit uses an almost identical multi-tool to the first WOTOW multi-tool we reviewed. The only difference is that they’ve added a puncture repair outfit and tool bag to put their own spin on things.

So, how did they do?

As far as the multi-tool goes, they’ve done OK. Frankly, the multi-tool looks like it came out of the same factory as the WOTOW product. The only change is that it has different branding and a lurid orange paint-job.

Things that are the same are the six hex keys, the two screwdrivers, the open wrench, and the 3-piece socket set. The weight, feel, and action also feels the same as the WOWTOW product. Maybe it did come out of the same factory?

What is undoubtedly different is the puncture repair outfit and the seat bag…

Unfortunately, we’re not keen on either.

Firstly, the puncture outfit has patches that need to be glued in place. This means you get a tube of glue, which means more weight. And this means more mess and fiddling around. So, so old-fashioned.

Secondly, it’s fair to say that we’ve never, ever, ever seen a bicycle seat bag like this before. In the photo, it shows it slung over the top tube as if this is the perfectly logical place to keep it. It looks ridiculous, and sadly this is what you’ll be stuck with as there is no other reasonable place you can fix it with the supplied mounting options.

Therefore…

We’ve come to the only two possible conclusions about the bag. They are; it’s completely useless, and the team involved in its design have never seen a bike, let alone ever ridden one.

Realistically, the only usable part of the kit is the multi-tool.

Bike Repair Tool Kit with Car Multitool Box Wrench, Screwdriver

Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

Pros

  • Good quality multi-tool.
  • Three socket wrenches.
  • Selection of six hex keys.

Cons

  • Old fashioned puncture repair kit.
  • Bike repair tool kit bag is useless.
  • The complete kit is heavy.

8 Hommie Bike Repair Tool Kits, 16-in-1 Bicycle Saddle Bag – Best Value for the Money Bicycle Tool Kit

This an interesting package that is possibly the best affordable bicycle tool kit on our list.

The multi-tool, again, look very familiar. It has the same design as the first WOTOW multi-tool on our list. We don’t need to go into too much detail other than to say you get a 6-piece hex key set, two screwdrivers, a T25 Torx key, and a 3-piece socket set.

We think you get the idea…

Where this bike repair tool kit from Hommie differs from the rest is that it also includes a highly usable puncture repair kit and a well-designed seat bag.

Hommie has its feet firmly planted in the 21st century and realizes that as cyclists, we now like the idea of using glue-free puncture repair patches. Thank goodness! So, less weight, less mess, and less hassle for sure.

Even more tire levers…

We could be picky and say that the inclusion of a third tire lever is a bit of a waste of time. Honestly, though, that will most probably find its way into the bin anyway — no real problem.

As far as the puncture repair outfit is concerned, the box is ticked…

The seat bag is also a great inclusion. It’s the best quality of all the seat bags in our review. The Velcro fasteners allow you to fix it under the seat, where it belongs. It’s weatherproof, the zip is strong, plus it’s more than big enough to fit in the kit provided together with an inner tube and a few additional tools.

Box ticked here too.

All in all, this tool kit, puncture repair kit, and seat bag are a great combination, and a hard one to beat at the price.

Hommie Bike Repair Tool Kits, 16-in-1 Bicycle Saddle Bag

Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

Pros

  • Good quality multi-tool.
  • No mess puncture repair outfit.
  • Quality seat bag.
  • Good value.

Cons

  • No chain splitter.

Best Bicycle Tool Kit Buying Guide

Best Bicycle Tool Kit Reviews

Multi-Tools

There are some must-haves for every multi-tool. Hex keys are essential. We expect to see 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm sizes included. Happily, all the multi-tools in our review had at least these. However, the Park Tool went above and beyond by offering an additional 1mm and 8mm sizes through virtue of its clever design.

All the multi-tools we reviewed also include another essential, which is the flat head screwdriver. All the multi-tools, except Park Tool, also have a Phillips head screwdriver. As it turns out, this a complete non-essential and a total waste of space and weight. Great for home use but superfluous for a bike.

The final thing a multi-tool should have is a chain splitter. If one isn’t included in the multi-tool, you’ll need to buy one separately, which can add to both the cost and weight of what you’re carrying. Only the Crankbrothers and Park Tool multi-tools have a chain splitter.

Puncture Repair Kits

A puncture repair outfit is the most important part of any bicycle tool kit. Having a puncture is the most common problem you’re likely to encounter on any ride. If you don’t have a puncture repair outfit, then prepare yourself for a few uncomfortable phone calls whilst you plead for someone to come and pick you up!

Modern patches don’t need glue and work just as effectively as ones that do. The Coffled repair kit was the only one that used patched that required glue. It’s not a great system, and we believe it belongs well and truly in the past.

Only a pair…

Something else you’ll need with your puncture repair outfit is a pair of tire levers. We emphasize a pair as that’s all you’ll need. Three are completely unnecessary. At a push, you can get away with just one. If you’re very strong, it’s even possible to take off some bike tires with your bare hands.

You will, of course, also need a pump. A mini or a micropump is very popular these days. Normally you wouldn’t expect to get a mini pump included in a bike tool kit. However, GUSODOR surprised us by providing one.

Full marks on that score though sadly it could have been a better quality one.

Seat Bags

Best Bicycle Tool Kit Review

If you have a bicycle tool kit, it makes sense to have a bag to put them in. If you have a bag, it will normally leave you plenty of space for a multi-tool, an inner tube, a spare link, and a mini pump. We think that, on balance, the best tool kit for your bike needs to include a bag as part of that kit.

The bike tool kits with bags, except for the one from Coffled, were all big enough, strong enough, and offered good fitting options to be up to the task. The best bag of the bunch was the one from Hommie.

Home Tools

Home tools are very different from tools that are designed to be used in an emergency. A good home tool kit is more comprehensive. The tools are also generally of better quality.

The only home tools we featured were from Ironman. These tools are entry to mid-level tools and will do an OK job in most circumstances. For the price, we have no complaints about the quality or the range.

Unless you intend to do regular maintenance over multiple bikes or get involved in major bike building projects, something like the toolset from Ironman is fine. If you want to get more involved in doing your own bike repairs, a basic home kit, like the one from Ironman, is a great place to start.

So, what is the Best Bicycle Tool Kit?

To sum up, we think the basic criteria for the best bike tool kit, in an emergency, should include three main ingredients. It should have a multi-tool, a puncture repair kit, and a seat bag to carry an inner tube and a few other essentials. These would include a chain splitter, if not already on the multi-tool, a spare quick link, and a mini-pump.

If this was just a review for a multi-tool, the…

Park Tool IB-3 I-Beam Multi-Tool

would be our number one choice. However, since it doesn’t include either a seat bag or puncture repair outfit, our top pick goes to the…

Hommie Bike Repair Tool Kit

It provides the best combination of all our three requirements. What’s more, it does so in a very affordable package.

Enjoy your bikes, and enjoy your rides.
