Top 6 Best Motorcycle Disc Locks You SHould Buy In 2020 Reviews
1 Kryptonite 000884 Keeper 5s Yellow Disc Lock – Best Budget Motorcycle Disc Lock
This is an inexpensive lock that will afford your ride a basic level of protection.
Nice and bright…
The Kryptonite Keeper is bright yellow and highly visible. The bright color is designed to alert a would-be thief to a lock being in place. It also reminds the owner not to set off with lock in place. It’s unfortunately easy to do and can have costly consequences.
The lock also has a bright orange Flexi cable that serves as a second reminder that you have a lock on your disc. Again, it’s also another handy reminder to potential thieves that you have security in place.
The Kryptonite is a stapler styled disc lock that’s made from reinforced stainless steel. It has a 5.5mm locking pin that can be used on just about any motorcycle. And it can be used on disc rotors up to 6mm thick.
The lock comes with two tough keys. But best of all, you can register your keys with the Keep Safe Program. This is a program that provides you with a set of brand-new keys in the event you lose the original set. It is valid to all Kryptonite Keeper 5 locks.
How cool is that?
One final feature is that this lock is relatively small and light. It measures just 3.1″ x 1.2″ x 1.2″ and weighs 1.55lbs. This means that it’s easy to transport either on your bike or even in your pocket. This makes using it between different bikes easy too.
We think that the Kryptonite Keeper 5 is a durable and robust lock. Fortunately, Kryptonite believes so too. They back their product with a no-quibble 12 months warranty, which is always good to see.
- Includes a reminder cable.
- Strong and durable.
- Free replacement key program.
- 12 months warranty.
- Not fully waterproof.
- The lock can jam.
2 Abus Brake disc lock Granit Detecto X Plus 8077 – Best Premium Motorcycle Disc Lock
The Abus Detecto X Plus 8077 is a premium disc lock that is classified as having an 18/20 security level. It not only offers a high level of security, but it also has a built-in alarm.
The first thing you notice about the Abus Brake disc lock is the weight. It weighs in close to two pounds, which is somewhat reassuring as far as the quality is concerned. For locks, heavier is generally better.
The 13.5mm locking bolt and the rest of the lock are manufactured using specially reinforced steel. A thief will not be able to cut this open or break the lock with just bolt cutters. A thief would have to use an angle grinder, which is likely to deter all but the most determined thief. The lock’s cylinders are also specially designed to make lock manipulation and ‘picking’ close to impossible.
However, if the lock is not enough of a deterrent, there’s a good chance that the 100dB integrated alarm should do the trick. The alarm automatically arms when it comes into contact with the disc thanks to the automatic disc recognition system.
To help you keep track of the alarm’s functions, LED lights indicate battery life and armed status. In the event someone tries to move your bike or interfere with the lock, the lights flash to act as another warning.
How does it detect threats?
The Abus uses 3D motion detection technology to set off the alarm. This detection system is useful not only to deter thieves but also to remind you that the lock is in place, in case you try to ride off with it still locked on to your disc.
The lock comes with a useful carry case. Once the disc lock is in the case and locked, it won’t sound regardless of being moved. We’re sure you’ll agree it’s an important feature.
- Extremely strong.
- Cylinders built to prevent manipulation and picking.
- Built-in alarm with movement detection.
- LED lights confirm battery status.
- The lock can be fiddly to close.
- The alarm sounds if the lock is not quickly secured.
3 Abus Detecto 7000 RS1 pixel yellow – Motorcycle brake disc lock – Easiest to Install Motorcycle Disc Lock
This is another quality disc lock from Abus. It is classed with a 13/30 security rating. This makes it strong by most disc lock standards, though not as hard to break as the Abus Brake disc lock Granit Detecto X Plus 8077 we just reviewed. It’s never the less still an impressive lock.
It’s made from specially hardened steel and has a single 3mm x 5mm square bolt. It also features a cylinder, that like the Dectecto X Plus 8077, is close to impossible to pick or manipulate.
The lock also has an alarm with 3D motion detection technology. When activated, it puts out an ear-splitting 100dB. There’s no doubt that it’s more than sufficient to deter all but the most determined thief under normal circumstances.
How is it powered?
The alarm is powered by two AAA batteries, and there are LED lights to let you know when the batteries need changing. Additionally, if the alarm is set-off, they flash to hopefully chase away any thieves. It’s an incredibly useful feature at night time.
The movement detection audio alarm is also useful in case you forget the lock has been attached. This gives you the chance to deactivate it, take it off, and save a potentially expensive repair bill.
Simple to use…
The one advantage of this lock over the bigger and stronger X Plus 8077 is that it’s easier to lock. It can be done with only one hand, thanks to the ‘snap and go’ system. It’s nice to have a less clumsy and fiddly lock.
Finally, the lock comes in its own carrying case, which makes transporting under your seat a little easier.
- It is difficult to pick and manipulate the lock cylinder.
- 100dB movement detection alarm.
- Lock and alarm are made from hardened steel.
- Easy to deploy.
- Not as strong as some of the Abus range.
4 Trimax T645S Hardened Metal Disc Lock – Yellow 5.5mm Pin (Short Throat) with Pouch & Reminder Cable – Best Nightime Motorcycle Disc Lock
Trimax is a well-established company that makes a range of locks and security products. The Trimax T645S is their latest disc lock that offers motorcycle security at a very affordable price.
So, what exactly do you get for your money?
You get a stapler style disc lock that weighs just a pound and has a 5.5mm hardened steel locking pin. The pin’s seating makes it hard to cut off or access, for any would-be thief. It’s easy to fix on any disc brake rotor, and you can fit it in seconds. The position of the cylinder helps for quickly securing the lock to your motorcycle.
An important addition to the lock is the reminder cable that comes included. It’s all too easy to forget the lock is in place and ride away, with expensive consequences. The reminder cable is an excellent visual reminder to prevent this from happening.
What else is worth mentioning?
The lock comes with three keys. One of the keys has a built-in mini-light to help you get the key into the lock at night time. In our experience, trying to use your keys at night can be tricky, so this is a welcome feature.
One small negative is that the keys can feel a little challenging to operate. Fortunately, this is easily fixed with a quick squirt of oil or lubricant into the cylinder.
Built to last…
Finishing on a positive note, the lock comes with a lifetime warranty. Since Trimax has been around for a while, we feel that this is worth something. With this in mind, hang onto your receipt just in case.
- Comes with a reminder cable.
- Mini-light incorporated on one key.
- Easy to attach.
- Lifetime warranty.
- The cylinder may need lubricating.
5 Master Lock Disc Brake Lock with Steel Shackle, 2 in. Wide, 8303DPS – Most Secure Motorcycle Disc Lock
This is another affordable, stable style disc lock.
The lock offers a good standard of basic security that can hold its own with any similar lock style. This is a company that has a long history in the business and knows how to make good quality locks. It’s a name we think you can believe in.
Can we prove that?
The main body of the lock is made from a combination of zinc and steel. It’s a great choice since this makes it resilient to corrosion and damage from the elements. We do not doubt that this is a hard-wearing and durable lock.
The lock has a 2″ throat with a .25″ shackle. It can be a tad tricky to lock in place, but conversely, it’s difficult to get to with cutting tools. It also has a tubular design with each cylinder being keyed differently, which prevents a universal key from being used.
What else to know?
The lock is bright red and easy to see, which is an excellent visual deterrent for thieves. It also comes with a bright red 6′ reminder cable that’s another great deterrent. Plus, of course, an excellent reminder to stop you riding off with your lock still attached.
We think this is a good basic lock, and there’s no doubt that Master Lock thinks so too. They offer a limited lifetime warranty, which is excellent, but they offer so much more as well.
So, what exactly is that?
Master Lock provides $1,000 worth of insurance if your bike is stolen when using one of their locks. That’s a lot of confidence in your product. This could be enough to tip the balance in their favor when deciding what to buy.
- Weatherproof zinc and steel lock body.
- All cylinders are keyed differently.
- Reminder cable included.
- $1,000 free insurance included.
- Lifetime limited warranty.
- Can be awkward to lock.
6 Xena X2 Disc Lock X-2Y – Most Durable Motorcycle Disc Lock
This is a durable and dependable lock. It weighs 1.36lbs and is made from mono-bloc 304 stainless steel. This is not only a super tough material, but it’s weatherproof too. You can leave this attached to your bike in any weather conditions without fear of it corroding.
The locking pin is made from carbide reinforced steel and is a rather chunky 14mm thick. This is substantially thicker than most other locks that are more typically under half this diameter. It’s, therefore, stronger and more difficult for thieves to cut.
The Xena X2 is a slightly different take on a stapler style disc lock. It has two attack points that are designed in a ‘V’ shape. The main advantage of this is that it requires significantly more force and time to break the lock.
Its innovative design makes it a better choice over most similar style locks. If you want to add some extra security for just a slightly increased cost, this is a good option.
Is it easy to use?
Yes, another feature we like is that it’s one of the easiest locks to both lock and unlock. The springloaded pins are nice and smooth, which makes attaching the lock a lot less awkward an affair than most locks we’ve used.
We also like the audible reassuring click that confirms the lock has been correctly closed.
Safe and secure…
We think this is one of the best motorcycle disc locks without an alarm that you can buy. It undoubtedly has to be one of the strongest. Other than the lack of a reminder cable, we can find very little to fault with the Xena X2.
- Made from mono-bloc 304 stainless steel.
- 14mm hardened steel locking pin.
- ‘V’ shaped design.
- Lock is easy to operate.
- No reminder cable.
Buying Guide for the Best Motorcycle Disc Locks
Disc locks are generally made from hardened metals such as reinforced steel. The…
…uses the thickest and strongest steel in our review. This is why it has such a high-security rating and is so hard to cut through. Regardless, even the least expensive disc locks use materials that are likely to give thieves a hard time.
As well as being strong, it’s also essential that a lock can stand up to rain and poor weather. Locks like the…
…use mono-bloc 304 stainless steel that has good anti-corrosive and weather-resistant properties.
Like the body of the alarm, a locking pin needs to be made from strong reinforced metal. However, the size is also significant. The bigger the locking pin, the better protection against any would-be thief.
The two locks with the strongest and biggest locking pins are the…
These have 13.5mm and 14mm diameter pins, respectively. Both of these are going to take some serious cutting to get through.
We’re a big fan of having a built-in alarm incorporated into the disc lock. It substantially increases the lock’s cost, but it substantially increases the amount of security and substantially decreases the chance of getting your motorcycle stolen.
Alarms on disc locks use motion detection technology to set them off. When they detect movement, they generate an audible and visible LED flashing alarm. Both the ABUS disc lock alarms use 3D motion detection, and there’s nothing to pick between them.
An additional benefit of these styles of alarms is that they will sound if you try to start and ride off on your bike, having forgotten to take off the lock—a potentially very expensive mistake.
The fact is that having a visible alarm can in itself be enough to put-off a would-be thief from targeting your bike. This is why we favor disc locks that are bright and easy to see.
Both the ABUD lock disc alarms have the benefit of flashing LED lights. However, the bright yellow of the…
…are almost impossible to miss.
Reminder cables are exactly what you think they are. They remind you that you have secured your front disc with a lock. This stops you from riding off with your lock still attached and causing damage to your wheel and disc.
Reminder cables are bright and fit between your disc and handlebars. All the non-alarmed disc locks include them in the package, except the Xena X2 Disc Lock X-2Y. Despite this, it’s not a deal-breaker for the Xena lock as reminder cables can be purchased separately for very little.

Back to disc locks…
So, what are the Best Motorcycle Disc Locks?
We think they all offer a big step-up in security from leaving your bike without being locked. We’d be happy to use any of the locks. However, if we had to take just one home with us, it would be the…
This is, therefore, our top pick of the lot.
Although it doesn’t have an alarm, it has the thickest locking pin, and we think it is as hard to break into as either of the more expensive ABUS disc locks. This relatively affordable lock also uses anti-corrosive and robust steel. Plus, it’s one of the easiest of all the disc locks to open and close.
Enjoy your bike, and enjoy your rides.
