Top 10 Best Oil Drain Pans To Consider In 2021 Reviews
1 Lumax LX-1632 Drainmaster Drain Pan with Waste Oil Storage Black – 15 Quart – Best Oil Drain Pan Container
There’s no getting around oil changes. Well, unless you have a fancy new electric vehicle that doesn’t require oil. Otherwise, your vehicle is going to require regular oil changes. Luckily this is an easy DIY job to do, and it doesn’t even have to be a messy one.
That’s because Lumax makes the LX-1632 Drainmaster Drain Pan. Not only will this help you catch every last drop, but it’s also been specifically designed for oil recycling. You can see this when you note a few design features.
This pan can be used without the need for an oil funnel mess. This is thanks to the large 8 inch opening.
Not only is this big enough to catch every drop, but you also won’t have to be perfectly lined up to start. This large cap screws on tight to keep the oil from sloshing out once the drain has completed. Plus, there’s an O-ring to minimize leaks.
How big is it?
This unit will hold 15 quarts of oil, which is about 3.75 gallons or 14.25 liters. Why does the world need so many measurement scales? Anyway, This makes it large enough for most vehicles. We also like the E-Z Roll wheels on the bottom. This makes it super easy to slide the unit in and out from underneath the vehicle.
Similarly, the handles and heavy-duty construction ensure both ease of use and durability. It’s also easy to drain directly, eliminating any mess further down the line.
What about the downsides?
While we didn’t experience the issue, we have heard tales of leaks. It seems that the drain plug may not be as leak-proof as desired.
We suggest you check for leaks before leaving this unattended and full of oil for any extended period. You don’t want a huge oil slick to clean up in your garage.
- 15 qt. capacity.
- Drain direct design.
- Heavy-duty construction.
- E-Z Roll wheels.
- Large 8″ opening.
- Exclusive O-Ring seal.
- Drain plug is known to leak occasionally.
2 Stens Oil Drain 750-732 – 15 Quart – Best Budget Oil Drain Pan
One of the more popular oil drain pans available is produced by Stens. Their model #750-732 is a fairly large volume oil draining pan. The design is a bit different, so let’s take a look…
Don’t forget you’ll have to drain away the oil eventually…
That’s why Stens opted for this unique pour spout design. Some people have complained that the spout leaks if you fill the pan completely. But if you have a smaller car and don’t need the full capacity, it’s perfect.
We like that it’s purposefully designed to support your oil filter while you complete the change. Just put the old filter on top, and the oil inside will drain right into the pan. It’s a smart design to help you minimize the mess on what is usually a dirty job.
What is it made from?
Stens has used a high-density resin to construct this oil pan. That means it won’t rust, dent, or corrode over the years. We like this, and we also like that it is resistant to solvents and other harsh chemicals.
This means you can also use it to drain your antifreeze in a pinch. And the pour spout makes disposing of the waste oil clean and easy.
However, we do have one complaint…
The hole that drains into the pan is just too small. We get the reasons for the design, and it does minimize spills when sliding the pan out from under your vehicle. However, it’s just too small to allow for a quick drain into the pan.
If you have a larger vehicle or a fast-flowing oil drain, you’ll end up with overflow. So, it’s not ideal for an SUV, but it’s still one of the best oil drains for small cars you can buy.
- 15 qt. capacity.
- Easy pour design.
- Won’t dent or rust.
- High-density resin construction.
- Great for smaller cars, ATVs, etc.
- May leak when filled to capacity.
- Drain hole leading into the pan is too small.
3 OEM TOOLS 87034 Portable Oil Drain Pan Green – 4 Gallon – Best Mid Range Oil Drain Pan
If you don’t want to worry about the flow into your pan, then you’ll like this next option from OEM Tools. Their product #87034 is wide open at the top, so there are no concerns about blocked inflow.
But what about spillage?
There are two nice features to a closed top oil pan. They are less likely to spill over when you slide it out from under the vehicle. However, OEM Tools has added a mess-free lip.
This wraps around the circumference of the pan, keeping the splash directed back in. This makes it ideal for keeping the garage or shop clean.
However, you cannot use this to store the oil…
That’s because there is no lid. So, you’ll need another oil pan/tank with a lid to store it for disposal. Luckily, this unit features a 1 inch angled spout for pouring, which means no funnel is required.
There is also a large back handle in addition to the two front handles. This makes emptying the pan easy and stable enough to eliminate spills. It also makes it one of the best oil drain pans for the price.
But how big is it?
This unit is 23-1/4 x 18 inches and holds 4 gallons, which is equal to 16 quarts. So, it’s big enough for most vehicles, for a single use.
Plus, it’s made from heavy-duty reinforced polyethylene. This makes it one of the best oil drain pans for professional garages. It’s chemical-resistant, so you can use it to drain antifreeze, transmission fluid, etc.
- 16 qt. capacity.
- Spill-free lip around the edge.
- Wide opening for easy use.
- Angled pouring spout.
- Heavy-duty reinforced polyethylene construction.
- No lid for storing the oil for later disposal.
4 Capri Tools CP21023 Portable Oil Drain Pan – 4.5 Gallon – Best Value for the Money Oil Drain Pan
Looking strikingly similar to the option just above, our next oil drain pan is produced by Capri Tools. It’s sold as model #CP21023, and it’s available in a couple of colors. We think it’s one of the best oil drain pans for the money.
What makes this oil drain pan so good?
We always like having a bit of spare space in the pan when we’ve finished draining our car’s oil. It keeps you from having that momentary panic of ‘OMG, it’s gonna overflow.’
It also helps to minimize spills if the pan isn’t completely full for transportation. That’s even true if you’re just moving the pan out from under your car or truck. This is why we like the extra-large 4.5 gallon oil drain pan from Capri Tools.
What else did we like?
We also like that it’s easy to clean and to drain. There is a handle molded into the rim to make it easy to pour out the oil for recycling. On the other side is a clever pour drain that helps you to minimize the mess.
What about storage?
You’ll need a separate used oil can, as this unit is not equipped with a lid. However, that does make it very easy to store empty as it’s easy to stack or nest.
The pan is made from polyethylene, which is tough yet pliable enough not to crack. It’s also rather resistant to chemicals, which makes it ideal for use throughout the garage or shop.
- 4.5 gallon capacity.
- Spill-free lip edge.
- Easy to use large opening.
- Built-in pouring spout.
- Constructed from polyethylene.
- Not ideal for storing oil for later disposal.
5 Matrix Concepts M28 Oil Drain Container Clear – Best Oil Drain Container
Many drivers will prefer to use an oil pan more like the M28 from Matrix Concepts. This unit is designed differently than some others, offering something for those that don’t want a wide open pan.
Why wouldn’t you want a wide open pan of oil sitting in the middle of your garage?
It’s not like there’s any possibility for that to go wrong. Except that things always go wrong when you leave something stored inappropriately. Luckily, the M28 is built to help you both drain and then store the old oil now sitting in your car.
With the first step, you turn the bottle/pan on its side and open BOTH plugs. You need to fully open the inlet so the oil will flow into the pan. You also need to open the air escape, or the whole thing will back up on you.
What’s the advantage of this design?
We like being able to set our oil filter down on the top of this unit. The oil in the filter will join the rest of the oil and flow down into the pan. You can then slide the whole thing out from under the car without worrying about spills. Then dispose of the filter, and seal the used oil container. You’re done until you’re ready to recycle the oil.
Plus, the container is designed to be stored long-term on end, minimizing the risk of leaks. There is also an extra-large handle to make it easy to handle. It really is the best oil drain pan container.
- Minimizes risk of spills.
- Also an excellent choice for draining oil filters.
- Fully sealed for long-term storage.
- Extra-large handle.
- Not the largest oil drain pan.
6 Capri Tools CP21024 Portable Oil Drain Pan Black – 2 Gallon – Best Drip Pan for Oil Changes
Another option for Capri Tools is their model #CP21024 Portable Oil Drain Pan. This is a great option if you own a motorcycle, ATV, UTV, or other small motorized vehicles. In fact, it might be the best small oil drain pan on the market.
Why is this unit ideal for ATVs?
Because it has a smaller capacity, making it easier to fit under those smaller motorized toys. In fact, this unit is limited to 2 gallons, making it less than half the size of the Capri Tool Drain Pan we just reviewed.
Like it’s big brother, this oil drain pan features a wide open design for the top. This means that you don’t require military precision to drain your oil without spills. There is also still the easy to use pouring spout for wrapping up the job. This will allow you to drain the pan of used oil into your recycling can.
On the other hand…
The open top does mean this pan is not great for keeping your oil for the long-term. It does feature an anti-splash lip, though. So, while it’s a bit small for most cars and trucks, this is still easily the best oil drain pan for ATVs.
It’s made from a tough polyethylene material, which provides decent durability. All in all, it’s the perfect option if you need something smaller than the CP21023.
- Two gallon capacity.
- Anti-Spill lip edge.
- Easy to use wide opening.
- Built-in draining spout.
- Made from polyethylene.
- Not the easiest pour spout to use.
7 OEM TOOLS 87017 Low Profile Oil Drain Pan Black – 2.8 Quart – Best Low Profile Oil Drain Pan
OEM Tools also makes an old school paint roller style oil drain pan. This is sold as model #87017, and it’s one of the best low profile oil drain pans for the price. In fact, it’s one of the cheapest oil drain pans available.
But, is it any good?
Well, that depends entirely on your requirement. If you’re looking to store the oil at the end of the job, you’ll need another pan. This unit does not come with a top that can be closed up to keep used oil secure.
Similarly, if you’re looking for an easy-to-empty oil pan, this may not be your first choice. It does not feature an easy pouring spout. However, this won’t be an issue if you store your old oil in an open oil drum or something similar.
But pouring from this into a small oil can might not be the easiest…
Having said that, there are a couple of key advantages to this option. First off, this unit measures less than 3 inches in height. This makes it the best low profile oil drain pan we reviewed.
We also like that it still holds 2.8 quarts of oil. This makes it ideal for those low riding joy craft sitting in your garage. It would also be ideal for changing the oil in your rider lawnmower. Plus, it features a curved splash guard lip to help minimize spills.
- 2.8 qt. capacity.
- Curved splash guard lip.
- Goose neck shape.
- Made from heavy-duty plastic.
- Low-profile design.
- Minimal capacity can lead to overflow.
8 Sherman Hopkins 11845MI FloTool Open Top Drain Pan – 5 Gallon – Best 5 Gallon Oil Drain Pan
Moving in the complete opposite direction, our next item is one of the largest oil drain pans. It’s made by Sherman Hopkins, and it’s sold as item #11845MI. We’ll call it the FloTool Open Top Drain Pan, and we like it a lot.
Large truck owners will love this unit…
Not only does this oil drain feature a wide open top for draining into, but it’s also huge. It holds a full 5 gallons of oil, making it one of the best large oil drain pans for the price.
We like that the top is wide and easy to drain into. Even better, it also features a pouring spout that is ideal for emptying the oil into another container. It’s mess-free and easy to manage.
What about splatters from fast-flowing oil?
You should have any issues with splattering drops thanks to the oversized lip. This also helps keep the fluid contained when you’re moving the pan about.
- Five gallon capacity.
- Oversized lip maintains splatter.
- Large open drain pan design.
- Pouring spout for ease.
- Feels really thin and cheap.
9 ATD Tools 5183 Heavy Duty Drain Tub – 30 Quart – Best Premium Oil Drain Pan
While it’s not the cheapest option, one of our favorite oil drain pans is made by ATD Tools. The model #5183 is a Heavy-Duty Drain Tub and features a design to save you time and a mess.
Save yourself the reach and the mess…
This drain pan is designed to provide you with a longer reaching pan. It’s 33 inches long and 22 inches deep. With a depth of 8 inches at the max, it provides a 30 quart capacity. That’s huge, but it’s not the only top selling point.
In addition to the large volume of oil it can hold, the shape of the pan is ideal. It provides you with a drip shelf on the edge of your pan. You can use this to extend the reach of the pan or as a shelf for a rag. Some mechanics can get away with resting the oil filter on it. We advise you to make sure there’s enough oil in the pan first to offset the weight, though.
But wait, there’s more…
This large apron design is also ideal for washing parts or leaving them to drain. You’ll love this pan for draining your radiators, transmission, crankcases, etc. It really is the best oil drain pan available.
- 30 qt. capacity.
- Large footprint for minimal spills.
- Highly versatile design.
- Built tough for regular use.
- May not fit under low riding vehicles.
10 Neiko 20762A Anti Splash Oil Drain Pan – 2 Gallon – Best Rated Oil Drain Pan
Neiko also makes an oil drain pan worth noting. Here we are talking about model #20762A, which we’ll call the Anti Splash Oil Drain Pan. It’s a great option for some but won’t fit the needs of everyone.
So, who is it designed for?
This unit measures about 12.5 inches in diameter and 5 inches in depth. That means it will fit under most vehicles without issue. It’s not the lowest profile you can but, but it is shallower than most.
What this means is a 2 gallon capacity, making it on the smaller side compared with the rest of our list. This makes it ideal for use on smaller motorized vehicles, where you don’t need a huge pan.
What is it constructed from?
This unit is made from recyclable polythene plastic, making it corrosion resistant and highly durable. It’s also highly resistant to chemicals, making it ideal for draining oil, gasoline, antifreeze, etc.
There is a handle on either side of the pan for easy transportation. They also make using the pour spout easy and keep you in control for a spill-free cleanup.
- Two gallon capacity.
- Low profile design.
- Recyclable polythene plastic material.
- Anti-Splash lip.
- Smaller capacity than some other options.
Best Oil Drain Pans Buying Guide
At the end of the day, a regular changing of your vehicle’s oil is flat out crucial. Oil manages to complete three different tasks at the same time. It lubricates to prevent wear, binds to microscopic debris, and helps transfer heat away from working parts.
However, the oil in your car can only operate at full efficiency for so long…
After a while, the oil will get built up with more and more debris. This is made up of metal shavings from within the engine, impurities in the fuel, and everyday ordinary dirt or dust. It all builds up, and the oil gets too thick to function effectively.
In fact, if you don’t change your oil regularly, it can lead to some serious internal damage to your vehicle. Unfortunately, draining the old oil out is never the easy job it should be.
When do we get to blame the car manufacturers?
You know how crucial oil is to an engine when you go to change it. Doing so requires you to get right under the middle of the engine. There’s no designing it for access; it needs to be right in the middle of the action.
This is why people spend so much time searching for the best oil drain pan for their car or truck. But when doing so, you should consider the size of the pan.
We’re talking about capacity here…
If you’re draining an SUV’s oil, then you’ll need a much larger pan than if you’re draining a motorcycle. You don’t want to overflow and cause a huge mess.
Then again, you also don’t want too large of a pan. If you have a low-riding vehicle, you’ll also want to make sure the pan fits underneath.
Safe disposal is crucial…
Once you’re filled the oil pan with the oil from your truck, you’ll need to dispose of it properly. This generally means taking it to an oil recycling facility. After all, the used oil from your engine is highly toxic to the environment.
You should never ever pour it down the drain or into the gutters. It will highly pollute the local environment in a harsh and severe manner.
This is why drain spouts are so important…
With good handles and a good pour spout, you can safely transfer the oil to the appropriate container for recycling or disposal. We think these two features are crucial, as is their design.
Not all drain spouts are created equal, and some only allow for a very slow pour. We advise you to consider this prior to starting the job. It’s the best way to avoid a major mess.
