8 Best Outdoor Bicycle Storage Sheds To Purchase In 2021 Reviews
1 Suncast 5′ x 3′ Horizontal Stow-Away Storage Shed – Best Maintenance Free Outdoor Bicycle Storage Shed
The Suncast storage shed measures 70″ x 44″ x 52″. It’s a decent enough size with a total storage capacity of 70 cubic feet. This is sufficient to store two bikes, of just about any size, along with a few essential accessories.
One thing we like is that it has a natural look to it, so it won’t look out of place in your yard. It’s made out of Polypropelene and also features a specially reinforced floor. It’s fully waterproof, too, so you’ll have no issues with the elements getting to your bikes.
Another issue you won’t have a problem with is maintenance. Happily, unlike real wood, this is a maintenance-free shed. The paintbrushes and materials can, therefore, be left firmly locked away.
Although there is plenty of room for two bikes, access to both can be a little awkward at times. To take the bicycles out of the shed, you can either get to them through the front doors or simply lift the roof panel. Access via the roof panel is a breeze, thanks to its gas shock hinge.
Getting the first bike out is no problem at all. However, it’s the second bike that causes all the problems. If you only want to take out the bike at the back, you won’t be able to do it. You’ll have to remove the other bike first.
If you ride the same bike on most days, this is unlikely to be an issue. Otherwise, you should look for a bicycle storage shed with a design that is rotated through 90 degrees with the opening at the narrower side.
Finishing on a positive note…
A couple of features we like, to finish with, include the ability to be able to lock and padlock all three doors. This can be done with a single padlock. We also like that Suncast provides a 10-year warranty.
That’s always something to applaud.
- Easy lift gas shock hinge.
- Lockable doors.
- Ten-year warranty.
- Accessing only the second bike can be awkward.
2 YardStash Bike Covers Outdoor Storage Waterproof – Safe, Reflective Outdoor Bicycle Cover – Best Value Outdoor Bicycle Storage Shed
There’s no doubt that this is an inexpensive solution to keeping your bike or bikes covered and protected from the elements. It’s big enough to store two bikes underneath. You can store any size of bikes, including larger fat bikes or cruisers. They’ll fit, no problem.
The XL version measures 82″ x 30″ x 44″. If you feel you need something a little larger, there is an XXL option that is 42″ rather than 30″ wide.
When eventually you realize that the best place for your bikes is on the wall, in the living room, the Yardstash bike cover can be re-purposed for covering up your lawnmower, snowmobile, or motorcycle.’
The cover is made from 210D and 600D polyester. This is the kind of material you typically find on many tents. It’s therefore guaranteed to keep out the rain and keep your bikes dry.
One of the features we like is the inclusion of a clasp buckle and elasticated seams. This means that once the cover is in place and secured, it will stay put. It’s a great thing to have once the wind starts to blow.
Another potentially handy feature would be the ability to pass through a lock via the loop of the cover and back to the bikes. This helps to further secure the cover and adds a little extra security for your bikes against theft. However, it’s unlikely to stop a thief unless the bikes are also locked against a railing or heavy object.
All in all, this is an outstanding, heavy-duty, and cost-effective bike cover.
- Waterproof and strong material.
- Elasticated seams.
- Big enough to cover two bikes.
- Integrated clasp buckle
- Good value.
- Low level of security.
3 Suncast Horizontal Outdoor Storage Shed for Backyards and Patios 34 Cubic Feet Capacity – Best Outdoor Kids Bicycle Storage Shed
This has a lot of the same great qualities as the previous Suncast storage shed we reviewed earlier. We like its natural look and the fact that it’s entirely maintenance-free. Made from Polypropelene, the fact is that this will never need painting, and it’s guaranteed never to rot or deteriorate.
Now that’s a good start.
We like the easy lift lid and the doors that open through a full 180 degrees. Finally, being able to lock all three doors together, using just a single padlock, is a definite security plus.
So, what about the negatives?
Unfortunately, the main criticism comes down to its size. It has a storage capacity of just 34 cubic feet. That’s over half of the storage capacity compared to the Suncast 5′ x 3′ Horizontal Stow-Away Storage Shed we reviewed earlier.
This 34 cubic-inch shed measures just 53″ wide, which is our biggest issue. It’s a great size to get two outdoor garbage cans inside, but it’s not so suitable for bikes. The lack of length leaves it too short to get in a standard-sized bike.
If you have a standard-sized bike, you will need to take off the front wheel for it to fit inside. It would be possible to squeeze two bikes in, but it would be very tight. Obviously, for regular bike users, this is a very poor option.
This is really best for kids’ bikes…
The only realistic way this can be used as an outdoor bicycle storage shed is if you want to store your kids’ bikes. Under these circumstances, you will be able to fit a pair of bikes in relatively easily.
This is a great storage shed, but we just wish it was between six to twelve inches longer. However, if you’re specifically looking to store kids’ bikes, this may be the best (and space-saving) option for you.
- Looks natural.
- Fully waterproof.
- Does not require maintenance.
- Easy access lid.
- The doors fold back 180 degrees.
- All three doors are lockable with one padlock.
- Only suitable for kids’ bikes.
4 Bravindew Outdoor Bike Storage Shed Tent Heavy Duty Space Saving Bike Shed – Best Affordable Outdoor Bicycle Storage Shed for Snowy Weather
This is a bike shed that’s essentially a tent-like construction. However, where it differs from a tent is that the use of materials is much thicker, heavier, and more durable. The frame is made from thick fiberglass poles. The main material is made from vinyl tarpaulin. It’s tear-proof, waterproof, and also UV fade proof.
Snow shedding roof…
If you stay in a much cooler climate and have regular snow, then there’s also no need to worry. The Bravindew Outdoor Storage Shed has a snow shedding roof. This is a genuine four seasons design that will make light work of heavy rain and storms too.
Putting up the shed is a relatively simple job. The fact is that anyone who’s put up a tent will be able to erect this in less than ten minutes, likely without having to resort to looking at the easy-to-follow instructions. Since you’re unlikely to be putting it up or down regularly, the time taken to put it together shouldn’t be too much of an issue, either.
One thing we particularly like about it is the generous size. Measuring 74 inches x 37.8 inches x 75.6 inches, it’s more than big enough to fit in two large adult bikes of any design. The nice thing too is that it is high enough that the majority of us don’t have to stoop to get inside. This makes storing and accessing your bikes all the easier.
What also helps for access is that the front of the shed has a zip door that covers around 80% of the total area. It can also be folded and tied back, making it easy to move things in and out regularly.
- Snow shedding roof.
- Four seasons capability.
- Tear-proof material.
- Good size.
- Large tie back door.
- It has zero security measures.
- Looks a little unrefined.
5 Arrow Yardsaver Compact Galvanized Steel Storage Shed with Pent Roof – Best Premium Outdoor Bicycle Storage Shed
This has to be the Cadillac of bike storage sheds. It’s also possibly one of the largest. If you require a lot of space, then this could very possibly be the best outdoor bicycle storage shed for you.
So, exactly how big is it?
It measures ten feet long by four feet wide. What’s more, it’s also just a few inches under seven feet tall. That makes it super easy for even our friends in the NBA to get in and out of with their stuff. If the length is a little too big for you, happily, there is a seven feet long option that has the same width and height.
The size allows you to easily store a couple of bikes with a whole host of other accessories and garden equipment. If you wanted to, it’s possible to keep four large bikes inside. However, there would then, of course, be little room for anything else.
The shed is made from electro-galvanized steel. Additionally, the steel is zinc treated to ensure it remains rust and corrosion-free. It has a sloping roof to shed any rain and snow. This all means that it’s strong and durable and will keep your bikes wholly protected from the elements.
Nice looking too…
Despite the use of steel, it has a rather pleasant appearance. The zinc coating gives it a neutral looking eggshell kind of aesthetic. At a glance, it appears to be made from wood and will not look out of place against the wall of your garage or anywhere else in the yard that you choose to put it.
Erecting the shed is relatively straightforward. All the panels and pieces are pre-drilled and pre-cut. Together with some detailed instructions, it shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours to put together.
Safe and secure…
Finally, the doors can be locked, which offers a welcome level of extra security for your bikes.
- Very large capacity.
- Rust and corrosion-proof.
- High roof.
- Lockable doors.
- There is no floor.
6 ALEKO BSP79GR Pop-Up Bike Storage Tent – Best Budget Portable Outdoor Bicycle Storage Shed
This is a budget-friendly tent-style bicycle storage shed. It erects quickly, like a regular tent, and is simple to fold away and store too. One of the big pluses of this storage shed is that it’s not only the quickest to put up and take down, but it also folds away into a small profile making it easy to store.
So, if you’re looking for a portable budget-friendly option…
Its 78″ x 64″ x 31″ size makes it suitable for storing two larger style bikes. The only bikes that may not fit without removing the front wheel are larger sized cruisers. This is because they have longer wheelbases and consequently may slightly creep over 64″ in length. Otherwise, any kind of bike should fit, including full-suspension mountain bikes and fat bikes.
Another great feature is that the main door can be fully opened and tied back. This makes putting in and taking out your bikes quick and easy.
The fabric is made from very tent-like material, so it is not as durable or resilient as the Bravindew tent we previously reviewed. The ALEKO BSP79GR Pop-Up Bike Storage Tent is weatherproof rather than waterproof. Furthermore, the material is not highly tear-resistant.
Better suited to milder climates…
This should be considered as a three seasons option. In heavy rain, wind, or snow, it might be found wanting. Given the very low price-point, it’s of little surprise. More positively, it does have a ventilation window to keep the air moving around in more humid conditions.
Sadly, like most of these kinds of fabric storage sheds, one of the key weaknesses is the lack of any security. Since it has a sewn-in floor and no holes are provided to pass through locks, it scores poorly in this area.
- Easy to erect and dismantle.
- Small storage profile.
- Good size for two bicycles.
- Not suitable in all weather conditions.
- No security.
7 ShelterLogic Shed-in-a-Box All Season Steel Metal Peak Roof Outdoor Storage Shed with Waterproof Cover – Best Extra Large Outdoor Bicycle Storage Shed
Let’s start with the dimensions first because this thing is massive. It measures 12′ x 12′ x 8′. If you have a ton of bikes to store, then this is undoubtedly the best outdoor bicycle storage shed for your needs. Exactly how many bikes you could fit inside, we’re not entirely sure. But trust us, it’s a lot.
If the extra-large option is just too large…
If this is a little too big for your requirements, then not to worry. This is the largest in the line-up, but they have six smaller sizes to choose from. The smallest size measures a relatively modest 6′ x 6′ x 6′. You can also specify a round roof for all sizes if the peak roof we’re reviewing here isn’t your thing.
The frame is made from 1 3/8″ thick steel tubing that has a powder-coated finish to prevent rusting and corrosion. The fabric covering the frame is made from super thick triple-layer ripstop nylon. It’s completely waterproof and also has been treated with a UV protective coating.
One cool feature is that the ripstop nylon cover can be kept taught at all times thanks to the innovative ratchet tensioning system. This ensures a high level of wind and weather resistance in all four seasons.
Of course, the catch is…
Erecting the shed does take a little bit of time, and it’s not as easy as putting up as other fabric-based storage sheds. It’s likely to take a couple of hours, and it also takes quite a while to take it down too. On the positive side, once erected, if you need to relocate it within your yard, it can be quickly moved without having to dismantle the frame or take off the cover.
Finally, it doesn’t come with a floor, which can be either positive or negative depending on your viewpoint. The plus for this is that it allows you to chain your bikes to something solid on the ground.
- Space for multiple bikes.
- Strong and durable.
- Waterproof across all four seasons.
- Excellent access.
- The smallest size could still be too big.
- Limited security.
- No floor.
8 2x4basics 90192MI Custom Shed Kit – Best DIY Wooden Outdoor Bicycle Storage Shed
When we have an image of a shed in our mind, then this is probably what it would look like. Ask a child to create a picture of a shed, and you’d get the same image. This is what a shed should look like. It looks great, and it’s guaranteed to never look out of place in your yard.
At this point, we should ensure that you understand this is a DIY kit that does not include the lumber. That will be down to you to source locally from a lumber yard.
What you do get is two sets of heavy-duty galvanized brackets. You also get a remarkably comprehensive set of instructions. These, when combined with your lumber, are enough to build a shed that measures 7′ x 8′.
If that’s not big enough for your needs, the good news is that you can simply buy more brackets to increase the size. Two sets of brackets will get you a 14′ long shed and three sets a 22′ long shed.
Assembly does take a basic level of skill, but the kit is designed to make the assembly process as straightforward as possible. They do this by making brackets that don’t require the lumber to be cut at an angle. Since most lumber yards will cut lumber to your specific requirements, it makes assembly with a few tools both quick and easy.
What can you keep in it?
The shed has plenty of room for a couple of bikes, accessories, and a few pieces of assorted garden equipment too. Plus, because it has a high roof and a wide opening door from the end, there will be no problems moving your bikes in and out.
The only downsides to the shed are the fact that there’s no lock on the door, though one could be easily added, plus the need for maintenance. Unfortunately, since it’s made from wood, it will need to be painted or treated regularly. However, once properly treated, it will look fantastic and will keep out the worst the elements can throw at it all-year-round.
- Modular design.
- Straightforward instructions.
- Environmentally friendly.
- Good access.
- Looks amazing.
- Maintenance requirements.
- Construction time.
Best Outdoor Bicycle Storage Shed Buying Guide
Choice of Materials
The traditional choice of materials for a storage shed is wood. We’re sure you all agree that, as far as aesthetics are concerned, it’s impossible to beat a wooden shed.
Most importantly, they create a durable and dependable shelter to keep your bikes dry. Plus, just as importantly, a wooden shed is excellent at controlling humidity, which is particularly important for those of you settled in areas with high levels of humidity. Finally, they have eco credentials that would even get Greta Thunberg smiling.
The inevitable catch…
Less positively, they do require regular maintenance. You’ll probably need to have to paint or creosote them every couple of years or so. If you’re one of those people with very little time on your hands, this might be a deal-breaker.
For those of you with loads of free time, which are not put off by some time-consuming construction and subsequent maintenance, the 2x4basics 90192MI Custom Shed Kit is an excellent option. The well-designed brackets and comprehensive instructions will help mitigate many of the typical hassles of building your own shed, and the result will be beautiful.
Plastic paneled sheds are, in many ways, the second-best option in terms of looks. Sheds, like those from Suncast, look almost identical to natural-wood sheds and will look great in any yard. However, they don’t come with all the unwanted associated maintenance.
What else to know?
Another notable advantage of plastic sheds is that they are very durable and are suitable for use in all seasons. They also usually come with lockable doors, which is a critical safety measure for your bikes.
The major downside is that they are not very good at controlling humidity. Some have specially made vented windows for this purpose. However, unfortunately, the vast majority don’t.
Metal sheds can look a little bit industrial for life in a yard, but as it turns out, there are plenty of decent options that look as good as they perform these days. The Arrow Yardsaver Compact Galvanized Steel Storage Shed, for instance, has a zinc coating to make it look more natural and more at home in your yard.
Galvanized steel sheds offer first-class protection against the elements. Plus, when properly treated, they are fully corrosive and rust-resistant. This means they are one of the most durable options on our list.
Using a fabric-based bicycle shed is the most cost-effective way of storing your bike or bikes. They also boast the extra advantage of being easy to assemble and store. Plus, they suffer from fewer humidity problems than with a metal or plastic alternative.
On the downside, they will tend to be less durable and offer less protection in extreme conditions. Some use a material that’s too thin to be suitable for all-year-round use. However, options like the Bravindew Outdoor Bike Storage Shed Tent and the ShelterLogic Shed-in-a-Box use a thick enough cover to keep your bikes safe, regardless of the weather outside.
Having a door that opens at the end, like on a traditional shed, or door, or doors that fully open at the front is ideal for easy access. Additionally, having plenty of height for headroom is a distinct bonus.
The Arrow Yardsaver Compact Galvanized Steel Storage Shed and the 2x4basics 90192MI Custom Shed Kit score maximum points on both of these criteria. You won’t have to stoop or scrabble around to get your bikes in and out if you buy either of these.
Most people generally only need to store a couple of bikes, which makes all of the storage sheds in our review perfectly acceptable for size. This is except for the Suncast 34 Cubic Feet Capacity Horizontal Outdoor Storage Shed. Unfortunately, although it will fit two bikes inside, you can only do so if you take off the front wheels. That’s unless you’re storing kids’ bikes, of course.
But if you’re looking for more room…
All the other options have plenty of room and good access. However, if you have a large bike selection, the ShelterLogic Shed-in-a-Box storage shed is impossible to beat. This thing is enormous and could easily store all your bikes and most probably most of your neighbors’ bikes too.
Security is always a big issue wherever you have to take or store your bikes. If you have to leave them outside, they are undoubtedly more vulnerable, so we’d always recommend having an extra layer of security to keep your bikes safe.
The steel shed, plastic sheds, and the traditional wooden shed would be our preferred choice in terms of security. There’s no doubt that having a lock on the door is an extra deterrent for any would-be thief.
If security is not a worry where you are…
This is where the storage sheds that use a fabric covering are found most wanting. Typically, they don’t have anywhere that your bikes can be secured to, other than putting a lock on the bike or bikes themselves. In our opinion, it’s far from a perfect solution unless your home has little to no vulnerability to any kind of security breach.
