1 Scorpion EXO Covert Helmet – Most Versatile Scorpion Helmet

Are you looking for a helmet that has both full-face and open-face capabilities? Then the Scorpion EXO Covert is potentially the right choice for you.

This helmet is made to turn heads. In full-face mode, it looks truly badass, reminiscent of some stormtrooper from a sci-fi movie. Coupled with a similarly cool bike, you will certainly be noticed. Plus, because it fits both men and women, in fact, it could be the best uni-sex helmet on our list.

The build and design…

The outer shell is constructed from a tough and durable polycarbonate that offers high protection levels. A dual-density EPS foam makes up the impact-absorbing liner, and the helmet is nicely padded for a comfortable finish. Additionally, the padding is removable for easy cleaning and made from antibacterial material.

The easily removable chin bar can be taken off to instantly convert the EXO Covert into an open-face helmet if you so desire. This nice design touch means you’re almost getting two helmets for the price of one.

Day and night riding…

Two retractable visors with a very wide field of vision are included in the package. One is clear for use on night rides, whilst the other has an exceptionally cool tinted look for riding in the sunshine.

Changing the visors is a relatively straightforward process, although you’ll have to be careful as the mounting points don’t look like they would take too much manhandling.

Safety and protection…

The modulated design of the EXO Covert means it hasn’t earned a SNELL safety rating. It did, however, pass all DOT (Department of Transport) safety ratings.

It’s a very well ventilated helmet due to the design and the number of vents. However, with increased ventilation comes increased noise levels. If you find this bothersome when riding, you’d be best advised to look at another model.

Multi-functional…

All in all, the aggressive look and multi-functional capabilities of the EXO Covert earn its place on our best Scorpion helmets list.

Scorpion EXO Covert Helmet

Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

Pros

  • Badass look.
  • Great versatility.
  • Excellent value for money.
  • Unique design.

Cons

  • Quite noisy.

2 Scorpion ST1400 Carbon Helmet – Best Premium Scorpion Helmet

The ST1400 is Scorpion’s best carbon fiber full-face helmet. It’s the most expensive helmet in this review but still pretty cheap for a 3K carbon fiber helmet with this many features. It’s designed for sport bikes and as a touring helmet.

And to be clear, this isn’t a full carbon fiber helmet. It’s actually a fiberglass shell with an outer coating of 3K carbon fiber.

Safety and protection…

Tested in Europe, the ST1400 received a 4/5 safety rating from SHARP. This is a decent level of protection should the unthinkable happen.

Furthermore, the EQRS (emergency quick removal system) on the cheek pads allows paramedics to safely remove the helmet if need be. The face shield is wide and tall, allowing for good vision in all directions. A shield lock prevents the visor from popping open unexpectedly.

Staying cool…

Conventional vents on the chin bar and the top of the helmet have two positions to play with. The helmet is well ventilated if you want it to be. Unfortunately, it’s on the noisier side. Once over 50mph, the wind rush makes things quite noisy.

The ST1400 comes equipped with a clear shield that has an anti-fog coating. A drop-down sun visor behind the shield is also a nice touch for those who don’t want to be swapping clear and tinted shields all the time.

Comfort and wearability…

To achieve the perfect fit, inflatable cheek pad bladders can be utilized to tighten things up if there is any looseness. This also helps to reduce the noise level slightly.

With the correct fit, the Scorpion ST1400 is undoubtedly a very comfortable helmet. A removable and washable liner helps to keep things fresh.

The ultimate full-face choice…

Offering outstanding value, the ultra-lightweight feature-rich ST1400 is surely the best Scorpion full-face helmet money can buy.

Scorpion ST1400 Carbon Helmet

Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Excellent value.
  • Good safety features.
  • High comfort levels.
  • Lightweight yet tough construction.

Cons

  • Quite noisy at over 50mph.

3 Scorpion EXO-R320 Full-Face Helmet – Best Budget Scorpion Helmet

Now for a helmet at the other end of Scorpion’s price scale, the EXO-R320 full-face helmet. Scorpion built its reputation on producing high quality, affordable motorcycle helmets, and the R320 is another great example of that.

Who is this helmet for?

This is a well-built, full-face street rider helmet. It’s certainly not the kind of helmet you’d take to the race track, even though it does have DOT certification.

Build and design…

The lightweight polycarbonate shell keeps the weight down to a mere 3.2 lbs. It’s designed for intermediate oval head shapes, which is the majority of the western market.

Ventilation is provided by a chin vent and two vents on the crown of the helmet. These are very easy to open and close on the fly and do a great job of keeping things cooled down if need be.

Comfort and wearability…

The face shield is clear but doesn’t come with an anti-fog coating. You’ll need to buy this separately if you’re riding in damp/wet environments. Fortunately, the shield can be swapped out very easily if need be. A lock keeps the shield from flying open unexpectedly.

The inner comfort linings and cheek pads are easily removable and washable. They’re also made from a smooth anti-microbial material that slides on and off your head with very little friction.

Room has been made for riders wearing glasses, and there’s plenty of space for a Bluetooth earpiece.

Affordable quality…

Five years ago, a helmet this slick with so many cool features would have cost twice as much. Hats off to Scorpion for bringing such quality at such an affordable price. Certainly, a great option for an affordable Scorpion helmet.

Scorpion EXO-R320 Full-Face Helmet

Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

Pros

  • Value that is hard to find elsewhere.
  • Good comfort and ventilation.
  • Very light.

Cons

  • Not fog resistant.
  • No SNELL rating.

4 Scorpion EXO R420 Full-Face Helmet – Best Value for Your Money Scorpion Helmet

The Scorpion EXO R420 has been on the market for over two years now and is now the best selling Scorpion helmet.

Fantastic value…

This SNELL certified helmet is packed full of features offering almost unbeatable value for money in its price range. It’s a polycarbonate shell, which explains the lower price, but with SNELL certification, you know you’ll be well protected.

The EXO R420 is a full-faced, street bike helmet that works well as a good all-rounder. The perfectly contoured design comes in a wide range of color and graphic designs, along with the classic matte black.

So what are you getting for your money?

Quite a lot, actually. The Ever Clear face shield is fog-resistant and employs what Scorpion calls an “Ellip-Tec ratchet” system. This means the hinge system on the shield is designed to pull back when closed, creating a tight seal against rain and wind.

Comfort and fit…

Ventilation is well catered for with standard chin, crown, and rear exhaust vents, all with good levels of adjustability. Noise level is a subjective thing, but we found the R420 to be on the quiet side even with all vents wide open.

EQRS cheek pads also feature, which is nice to see on a relatively low-cost helmet. As with all Scorpion helmets, the R420 inner lining is a comfortable affair, utilizing their anti-microbial, KwikWick II material.

Bluetooth communication devices also have plenty of room, and there’s a groove cut for our spectacled friends.

Hard to beat for the price…

That’s a lot of bang for your buck. It’s therefore easy to understand the enduring popularity of the EXO-R420, and not hard to see why it made this list of best Scorpion helmets you can buy.

Scorpion EXO R420 Full-Face Helmet

Our rating:4.7 out of 5 stars (4.7 / 5)

Pros

  • Incredible value for money.
  • Stylishly contoured.
  • Relatively quiet.
  • Attractive package.

Cons

  • None at this price.

5 Scorpion EXO-GT920 Modular Helmet – Best Full-Face Modular Scorpion Helmet

The EXO-GT920 is a versatile helmet with an aerodynamic sports bike design. One that can quite easily double up for the daily commute.

It has a polycarbonate shell with a dual-density EPS shock absorbing inner lining. Unfortunately, although it is DOT certified, the GT920 does not have a SNELL certificate (no modular helmet does). To make things worse, it only scored a 2/5 for safety on the British SHARP test. In fairness, modular helmets never score that high due to their obvious weak points, but this isn’t confidence-inspiring.

Build and design…

Ventilation is provided by a single chin vent and a solo crown vent that are both very easy to open and close, even when wearing gloves. It’s a simple but effective system, and we were pleasantly surprised at how quiet the noise levels were with the vents open and the chin bar down.

The face shield comes equipped with Scorpions Ever Clear anti-fog coating and has a wide viewing angle, giving good peripheral vision. The Ellip-Tec closing system helps create a good seal against the wind and rain. There’s also an internal flip-down sun-visor with an Ever Clear coating.

Comfort and fit…

For those slower daily commutes on a hot day, the chin bar flips up out of sight, turning your full-face helmet into an open-face design. A centrally located button under the chin bar simply and effectively completes this action.

A metal locking mechanism clicks the chin bar back into place. It feels sturdy enough when closed, but it’s always going to be a weak point with modular helmets.

A great affordable, lightweight option…

All in all, the Scorpion EXO-GT920 is a lightweight and multi-functional helmet that won’t cost you the earth. Is it the best modular Scorpion helmet on this list, though? Probably not.

Scorpion EXO-GT920 Modular Helmet

Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

Pros

  • Versatile helmet.
  • Relatively quiet.
  • Scorpion value for money.

Cons

  • Low safety rating.

6 Scorpion EXO-AT950 Adventure Touring Motorcycle Helmet – Best Touring Scorpion Helmet

Designed primarily for adventure touring rides, the Scorpion EXO-GT950 is a modular helmet that can adapt to almost any riding conditions.

Riding on the road, simply remove the peak and keep the face shield and chin bar down, and you have a full-face helmet. Hitting heavy trails, you can leave the peak on, remove the face shield and use a pair of goggles instead. Either way, you always have the convenience of the flip-up chin bar if you need to take a drink or cool down.

Build and design…

As with all Scorpion helmets, the GT950 has a slick, slightly aggressive look to it. The face shield has a very wide and deep view, a necessary attribute for off-road riding.

It’s been given the Ever Clear anti-fog treatment, as has the drop-down sun visor. The Shield is very easily removed if you want to pop on some goggles instead.

Let the air through…

The GT950 only has a single crown vent and one chin vent, but it’s a surprisingly well-ventilated helmet. The Crown vent does a nice job of circulating air through to the rear exhaust vents, and the chin vent has three settings for different degrees of airflow.

Considering the peak and the various sliders and grooves, the GT950 is a pretty quiet modular helmet, even with the vents fully open.

Safety and protection…

The GT950 is DOT certified but hasn’t been tested by either SNELL or SHARP yet, so it’s hard to say exactly how much impact protection it provides. We particularly liked the EPS shock-absorbing lining on the chin bar, though. Not something you usually find on a modular helmet.

Throw in a very reasonable price, a relatively lightweight build (4lbs), speaker pockets for your Bluetooth devices, and grooves for glasses, and you have one hell of a versatile helmet.

Versatility at its best…

If you’re planning to ride both on and off-road, the GT950 is quite possibly the most versatile helmet they offer if you only want to buy one helmet.

Scorpion EXO-AT950 Adventure Touring Motorcycle Helmet

Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Pros

  • Multi-functionality.
  • 5-year warranty.
  • Excellent value.
  • Extra chin-bar protection

Cons

  • Untested by SNELL/SHARP.

7 Scorpion EXO-T1200 Full-Face Street Helmet – Best Street Only Scorpion Helmet

Now for a full-face, street only helmet, the Scorpion EXO-T1200. It’s a composite fiber construction, designed primarily for a sit-up riding position as opposed to racing, head down style.

Safety first…

It has been DOT certified and has a SHARP safety score of 3/5. This is slightly disappointing for one of Scorpion’s more expensive helmets. Scorpion claims the TCT (Thermodynamic, Composite Technology) shell is a revelation for reducing weight whilst absorbing impact well. But we’re not quite sure SHARP agrees on that one.

Ventilation isn’t a problem, with two crown vents and a single chin vent cooling things down. Unfortunately, when fully open, the vents create quite a lot of noise. Yes, noise levels are a subjective thing, but in comparison to the other helmets on this list, this is definitely the loudest.

So what are the positives?

Well, the T1200 is very comfortable and comes in three different shell sizes for each of the overall size ranges. It’s also equipped with inflatable cheek pads or Airfit system if the fit isn’t quite snug enough. In case of a serious accident, EQRS cheek pads remove easily.

It’s also worth mentioning that the build quality is excellent for a mid-priced helmet. Scorpion really excels in this department, right across their range of helmets. For most other brands, this kind of quality finish will cost quite a bit extra.

A good all-rounder…

All in all, the Scorpion EXO T1200 is a competent performer that could do with being a little quieter. We’d like to see a safety rating of 4/5, but it’s very well constructed and still remarkably good value when compared to the competition.

Scorpion EXO-T1200 Full-Face Street Helmet

Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Overall build quality.
  • Airfit System.
  • EQRS quick removal.

Cons

  • Rather loud when vented.
  • Average safety rating.

8 Scorpion AT950 – Outrigger with Dual Pane Shield – Best Off-Road Scorpion Helmet

We won’t spend too much time on this model as it is the exact same helmet as the adventure touring AT950 but with one key difference.

The AT950 Outrigger is equipped with a dual-pane face shield that makes it the best snowmobile helmet on our list. You can remove the face shield for googles if you want this to double up as a trail riding helmet for your adventure touring bike too.

Time to get cold…

If you’re thinking of hitting the snow, then this would be the Scorpion helmet for you.

Scorpion AT950 - Outrigger with Dual Pane Shield

Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

Pros

  • Motorbike and snowmobile ready.
  • 5-year warranty.
  • Dual-pane face shield.

Cons

  • DOT certified only.

Best Scorpion Helmets Buying Guide

Scorpion Helmet Styles

There are several different types of Scorpion helmets. You’ll need to narrow down which style most suits your riding requirements.

Full-Face

For road bike riding, full-face helmets are the safest choice as they protect your whole head. They score highly in safety tests as they protect the face, chin, and jaw. Most sportbike riders opt for this type of helmet due to the aerodynamic design and wind-blocking capabilities.

Modular

Also known as flip-up helmets, they are a versatile mix between full-face and open-face helmets. This design allows for the chin bar and visor to be flipped up, allowing you to ride open-faced if you so desire. Flip it back down and lock it in place and your back to full-face protection.

Open-Face

Otherwise known as ¾ helmets, they protect the top and sides of your head. The face is open to the elements for breathability. No chin bar means they aren’t as safe in the event of an accident but are lighter and more comfortable.

Off-Road Helmets

For trail riding or motocross racing, this will be your helmet of choice. A reinforced chin bar and large visor make them safer for rocky environments. They are lightweight and have good airflow. However, you’ll need glasses or goggles to protect your eyes.

Dual-Sport Helmets

These are a hybrid of a full-face and an off-road helmet. They are usually more padded than a standard off-road helmet and often have a flip-down face shield. This makes them a nice option for on and off-road riding.

Other Considerations

Best Scorpion Helmets Review

Scorpion helmets have the cool factor nailed down, but what else should you be paying attention to?

Size

You’ll need to gauge your head size with a tape measure to find the circumference. This will enable you to buy the correct helmet size. A snug fit is what you’re after.

If there is any noticeable movement, it’s too big. If it feels constrictive, then it’s too small. Obviously, heads come in all shapes and sizes, and it may take a padding adjustment to find the perfect fit for you.

Helmet Style

You’ll need to take into account the kind of bike and riding you’ll be doing. Different helmet styles are designed for specific riding positions. Choose the wrong one, and you may experience discomfort or distraction when riding.

A fast sports bike will require a more aerodynamic style that channels the air, with a more angled chin bar. This will help avoid the helmet catching the wind and getting pushed up. A dangerous situation indeed. Cruiser bikes have more options as you are seated in a more upright position.

The kind of riding, duration of your rides, and weather will also play a big part in the style of helmet you should look for.

Ventilation

This is a major factor in how comfortable your helmet will be. Without good ventilation, it can be a stifling experience and rather hard to breathe, especially with a full-face helmet.

Also, the more you sweat, the more disgusting your helmet will become over time, and the more time you’ll have to spend rectifying the situation.

Fortunately, all Scorpion helmets are well ventilated to allow the free flow of air throughout the helmet. Vents are usually situated in the mouth area, on top, and at the rear of the helmet. Make sure the vents are adjustable so you can control the airflow to your liking.

Removable padding

Regardless of your helmet design, you will sweat to some degree. Ensure the inner padding is made from breathable materials and that it’s removable and washable for when things get a little too musty.

Hopefully, you’re now fully equipped and informed to buy the Scorpion Helmet of your dreams. The wide-open road awaits.
