Top 8 Best Tool Chests Of 2020 You Should Buy Reviews
1 Thor Group 72″ Wide 15 Drawer Stainless Steel Anti-Fingerprint Tool Chest w/Work Station – Best Looking Tool Chest
You’ll have to forgive the first entry on our list; we couldn’t help ourselves. So, before we even begin, don’t be scared by the price point of this first option. It is, actually, not the most expensive on our list, but we do have cheaper options below.
The first tool chests on our list is from Thor Group, and it’s shockingly beautiful. In fact, it’s likely the most beautiful tool chest we’ve ever seen.
This thing belongs in the living room, not the garage…
It’s 72 inches wide and composed of stainless steel that won’t easily pick up your grubby fingerprint smudges. It features 15 drawers for tool storage and OCD organization and a workstation top. Plus, the chest comes to a good working height of 37.5 inches, and it’s 18 inches deep.
The worktop is made from Rubberwood, which makes for a fantastic work surface for most jobs. It’s also tough, easy to care for, and unlikely to wear away or chip easily.
How heavy-duty is it?
This tool chest’s features 100 pound rated ball-bearing drawer slides. And it rolls on four 2 inch casters, which help you shift it around the garage or shop as needed.
It’s nice that two of the wheels lock, though we wish all four did. We think it just makes for a better work station. The locking system on the drawers, however, we love.
Safe and secure…
If you have enough tools to fill this chest, then you have a good chunk of change lying around your garage or shop. And it’s always advisable to keep your tools under lock and key.
Now, yes, this unit is expensive. However, for what you’re getting, it’s also a steal. We think this easily makes it one of the best tool chests for handymen, mechanics, etc.
- 72” wide x 37.5” high x 18” deep.
- 15 lockable drawers.
- 100 lb. rated drawer slides.
- Rubberwood worktop.
- Anti-Fingerprint stainless steel.
2 Stanley 028001L 28-Inch Structural Foam Toolbox – Best Budget Tool Chest
Our next entry is one of the best tool chests for under $100. Yes, we just went from ‘ouch that’s expensive, but we want one’ to one we can actually afford. It’s made by Stanley, and it is the model #028001L.
And what do you get for such a shockingly low price?
Well, you don’t get a tool chest per se. You get a tool box instead. But, it’s quite a box, and it’s made by the same guys that make many of your quality tools.
This is an extra-heavy-duty professional toolbox. It features a great water seal that makes this one of the best water-resistant tool boxes you can buy. We think it’s a great option for lugging around your tools.
What is it made from?
This tool box is composed of thermoplastic resin with flake mica for increased durability. The latches are rust-resistant and built tough to keep your precious tools from spilling out.
There is a portable half tray that slips in and out easily. This helps with organization and allows you to carry larger items if necessary.
We also like the V-shaped groove on the lid, which can hold lumber and pipes in place. The tool chest is 28 inches overall, and exactly the kind of thing everyone should keep at hand. It’s one of the best handyman tool boxes we would say.
Our only complaints on this unit relate to the latches, which we wish were tougher, and the resin shell. When left in the sun, this material can warp. While we didn’t see any issues in testing, we shouldn’t recommend leaving this lying open in the sun for a long time.
- 28” long x 12.6” wide x 11.6” high.
- Weighs 10.2 lbs.
- V-groove track.
- Water-resistant design.
- Tough soft-grip handle.
- The latches could be stronger.
- Don’t leave the tool box sitting in the sun.
3 Stanley Modular Rolling Workshop – Best Modular Tool Chests
These days you’re not limited to the traditional tool box or mechanics style tool chests cabinets. Stanley also makes a really interesting Modular Tool Organization System. We think this is a great idea for any garage with a large number of tools, and a need to stay mobile.
Do you often take your tools out of the shop?
There are two types of tool people. One never lets the tools leave his garage. Work comes to the garage or shop, where the tools remain. The other is always out working on something in the field.
If you’re one of the latter, then you will love this system. It allows you to organize your tools, however you see fit. Then when you have a job to do, you can choose which boxes to take out with you.
What makes it mobile?
This unit has been designed with 7-inch heavy-duty wheels and an aluminum telescopic back handle. This makes the unit very easy to move.
Also included are two drawers with removable dividers that are supported by heavy-duty ball bearing slides. The whole thing is split into three sections. On top is a removable tool box with a built-in drawer for small items.
The middles section is two more drawers, one of which is deeper for larger tools. While the bottom section is a flip bin and can be used for a wide variety of things. There is also even a pocket on the back for longer items.
Practical, but it could have a tougher build…
We think this is a really nifty design that is great for moving things around conveniently. The only bad side is it could be built a little tougher.
- 7” heavy-duty wheels.
- Telescoping aluminum handle.
- Heavy-duty ball-bearing slides.
- Very portable.
- Easy to organize.
- Not the strongest tool chest.
4 Craftsman 3-Drawer Metal Portable Chest Toolbox Red – Most Durable Tool Chest
When it comes to tool boxes, there is no brand more recognizable than Craftsman. And their 3-Drawer Metal Toolbox is still one of the best portable tool chests there is.
Are you looking for a tool box that is built to last?
This unit is designed tough and constructed from heavy-duty steel. The full extensions drawers slides support 25 pounds, making them more than adequate for the job. The box itself measures 20.5 x 8.5 x 12 inches, which means it is easy and convenient to move from job to job.
We also like the ability to lock the tool box tight. It features a padlock hasp, and the box is tough enough to be locked tight. We also like the comfort grip handle on the top.
What about carrying around larger items?
This tool box features three drawers for standard items and a top-hinged area for larger ones. All in all, there is about 1,558 cubic inches of space inside to store your tools.
The only major downside is the weight. Even empty, this unit weighs a hair over 20 pounds. It’s worth it, providing security and durability, but it does make heavy tools even heavier.
- 20.5” long x 8.5” wide x 12” high.
- Full-extension drawer slides.
- Lockable design.
- On the heavy side for its size.
5 Stanley 037025H 50 Gallon Mobile Chest – Best Tool Chest for DIY’ers
Next, we have another superb mobile tool chest, the model #037025H, from Stanley. It’s a larger option on wheels for those that need to bring along that little bit extra. We think this makes it a great option for hobbyists and DIYers.
How many tools do you carry to and from the job?
With the Stanley Mobile Chest, you have a 50-gallon chest to fill with your favorite dad’s toys. The unit measures 34 x 20 x 15 inches, which gives you more than enough space to take everything you could need.
In fact, they had to attach a large telescoping steel handle to help you maneuver it once full. This cart features a nice soft grip to help with control. There’s also a couple of heavy-duty wheels to help you get around.
But there is a catch…
We obviously like the enormous capacity and the other features like the portable tote tray. We also like the two 2 x 4 inch grooves on the lid. However, we see one major flaw in the design.
This tool chests tends to tilt when you’re pulling it along behind you. In fact, it can do it to such a degree that all the tools inside slide to the back. It will depend on what you’re hauling, but this could become an organizational mess.
- Huge internal capacity.
- Lockable design
- Heavy-duty wheels for mobility.
- Cheap for the size.
- Not watertight.
- Hard to keep organized due to tools moving around.
6 Husky Leather Bound Heavy-duty 23 Drawer 56” Rolling Tool Chest Cabinet – Best Large Capacity Tool Chest
If you really have a lot of tools and you want to do things right, then you need this next option. This is made by Husky and known as the Leather Bound Rolling Tool Chest. It’s expensive, but it’s also exactly what we want for our shop.
How many tools do you own?
Well, it doesn’t matter. With the 52 x 56.8 x 21.5 inches of this tool chest, you’re provided with 35,796 cubic inches of storage space. It can also hold up to 2,500 pounds of tools.
If that’s not enough space, then your wife is more understanding than most. This whole tool cabinet rides on six casters, four of which swivel and can be locked in place.
What other features are built-in?
We like the way this unit can easily be locked tight. We also like the drawer liners. However, we especially like the power strip with USB ports.
This will help keep you from tripping over a million extension cords spread across your shop. Oh, and did we mention the drawer slides are those fancy soft-closing type? What more do you want?
- Space for every tool you dream of owning.
- Lockable design.
- Built-in power strip.
- Tough, durable construction.
- On the expensive side of our list.
7 Goplus 6-Drawer Rolling Tool Chest w/Removable Tool Storage Cabinet – Best Value for the Money Tool Chest
If the unit we just reviewed is what you need, but you’d prefer something smaller, we’ve got you covered. Up next is the best cheap tool chest. It’s produced by Goplus, and it has a few really nice features.
Would you like a 2-in-1 tool chest and cabinet?
This unit has a really cool design that allows you to remove the tool chest from the lower tool chest drawer set and take it anywhere you please. Or, if you’re in the workshop, leave it on top of the unit for quick access.
When it’s in that position, you can put larger tools or smaller pieces of machinery in the bottom section. Or, alternatively, when the removable tool box is in its lower compartment, you have a nice worktop to do your jobs on. The design basically gives you the versatility to use the chest as you wish for different applications.
What is it made from?
This is a high-quality cold-rolled steel tool chest. It’s highly durable and painted with a glossy anti-rust corrosion-hesitant paint. This makes it great for both indoor and outdoor use.
It’s also quite large. Not as big as the Husky unit we just reviewed, but it does measure 13 x 23.5 x 42.5 inches. And, it’s on wheels to make it easy to move around the shop.
Plenty of drawers…
We also like that the drawers are lockable, and there are six of them in total. Two are fairly large, and four are smaller. All in all, we think this is the best tool chest combo available.
- Combo tool chest and cabinet design.
- Highly versatile.
- Designed for indoor and outdoor use.
- Bigger than a tool box without being massive like a tool chest.
- We’d actually like it slightly larger.
8 Homak RD02036081 H2PRO Series 36-Inch 8-Drawer Top Chest – Most Secure Tool Chest
The final option in our search for the best tool chests is from Homak. Their model #RD02036081 is part of the H2PRO Series. We think this is the best 36” tool chests for a few reasons.
You won’t need to worry about anyone walking away with your tools…
This unit is big, heavy, and extremely secure. It features a HMC high-security tubular locking system that will keep your tools from sprouting legs. Plus, it’s about 182 pounds empty, so no one’s just walking away with it if you leave the garage door open.
We really like the full-length aluminum drawer handles. They both look good and feel good without getting in the way. It’s also nice that they include EVA drawer liners and a top mat.
But, what is our favorite part of this tool chest?
Well, that’s the foresight that Homak put into its construction. The tool chest has replaceable ball-bearing drawer slides. So, should something go wrong one day with a slide, it’s an easy fix. We also really appreciate the full-extension gas struts that hold open the top compartment. They are solid and give excellent access.
We also like the assortment of drawer sizes. This is one of the easiest tool chests to organize. And if that’s not enough, it’s backed by an 8-Year Limited Warranty.
- HMC High-security tubular locking system.
- Intelligently designed.
- 21-3/4” deep x 35-1/4″ long x 24-1/2” high.
- Power cord access hole.
- Weighs 182 lbs.
- Backed by an 8-Year Limited Warranty.
- More expensive than some of the other options.
Best Tool Chests Buying Guide
When you start searching for the best tool chest for your needs, there are a few things to consider. The options we’ve reviewed are highly varied, so how do you separate them?
So, first off, how many tools do you own right now?
If you don’t already have a tool chest, then you may have more than you realize. Tools found scattered throughout the house, garage, shop, etc. can quickly add up to quite the assortment. Now, look closely at what you have and what you’re missing.
Then consider how much room you’ll need if you replace the missing tools. You now have an idea of the smallest tool chest you should consider purchasing.
Know the difference…
Tool boxes are nice companions to tool chests, but they should be seen as two different things. A tool chest tends to be large, and either fixed in place or stationary via casters. Tool boxes also come in a range of sizes as well, but they are usually portable with a handle.
Tool boxes allow you to take your tools out of the shop. Tool chests keep your tools organized in the shop.
However, it is more complicated than that…
Especially when you consider some options like the modular wheeled system from Stanley, which we reviewed and others of a similar design. These new options allow you to take considerably more tools with you.
If you’re into running a Razor through the desert far from the city or exploring with your 4×4 deep in the wilderness, you need to have tools on-hand. Actually, if you’re working anything with a motor, engine, or circuit board, then you need to have tools on-hand.
Which brings us to security…
If you’re going to have tools, you should consider locking them up. Many of us have, do, and will spend an absolute fortune on high-quality tools that will last. They add up quickly, and there’s always a reason to buy another. It’s not long before you have a lot of money sitting in your tool chest.
Therefore, we would highly advise that you spend a bit more on a good, solid home for them. Not only will a good tool chest keep people from walking off with your tools, but it will also help keep them organized.
Especially if it has drawers…
We like drawers. We especially like tool chests with drawers of different sizes. This makes organizing considerably easier. As does a lot of drawers. You get our point, drawers are essential.
They should also be heavy-duty. Tools are heavy, and we are not always the most gentle of creatures. Especially when frustrated by something mechanical. Just in case you might slam them in because of frustration, we advise that you get heavy-duty drawer slides.
The only thing left to consider is the price…
On this, we have only one thing to say, don’t skimp. Spend that little bit extra on a locking tool chest, and get one bigger than you think you need. We promise you that it won’t be long before it’s full!

With so much information at your fingertips, you should now be able to easily pick a favorite. The options are varied, so there’s something for every need and budget in our review.
But, if you still can’t make up your mind, our favorite pick for the best tool chest was the…
Yes, it is a bit expensive. However, if you have enough tools to fill it, then you have spent enough already to need the security it provides. Plus, it’s beautiful and highly functional.
Happy tool organizing.
