1 Rain-X 600001 – Best Value for the Money Windshield Repair Kit

From the company that is known to outsmart the elements, we have this first windshield repair kit. The Rain-X 600001 windshield repair kit is easy to use and can be applied in only a few minutes. If you want one of the best fast curing windshield repair kits, this is worth a closer look.

Quick as a flash…

It comes with an applicator base with rubber feet that secure around the damaged section of the windshield. The legs on the applicator are adjustable, allowing you to fill chips up to one inch in diameter.

Once in position, simply remove the cap from the small resin bottle and squeeze it into the pressure driver at the top of the base. The result is one of the easiest to use windshield repair kits you can buy.

Pressure…

The pressure driver on this windshield repair kit will force the resin into the cracks when you screw it down toward the windshield. It does not hold that much resin, so you may have to refill it and repeatedly apply more pressure.

You need to be careful not to overfill the pressure chamber. If the resin does not fill the crack entirely, we recommend applying a bit of heat to the inside of your windshield. The added heat will help spread the resin more evenly throughout the crack.

Once that is done, apply the included curing strips and wait about ten minutes. For long cracks, you can simply squeeze the resin directly into the crack. Then just scrape off any access once it hardens.

Rain-X 600001

Our rating:3.9 out of 5 stars (3.9 / 5)

Pros

  • It can be reused.
  • Cures in 10 minutes.
  • 12-inch cracks.

Cons

  • Limited to one layer of glass.

2 Permatex 09103 – Best Bullseye Chips Windshield Repair Kit

The next windshield repair kit comes to use from Permatex. This Permatex windshield repair kit can fill bullseye-shaped chips or cracks up to one and a quarter-inch in diameter.

Speaking of bullseyes, this kit comes with an adhesive applicator shaped like a bullseye. The small hole in the middle of the applicator allows you to precisely position it around the crack.

Air bubbles…

Once you have it in place, you need to make sure you remove all the air bubbles. If you do not, it will not stick. This will prevent you from correctly attaching the included resin pedestal.

The pedestal has a tube protruding out from it where you will insert your resin. You want to squeeze about three-fourths of this resin into the pedestal. Then attach the syringe to the pedestal and pull back on the plunger. The resin will then fill up the air pockets in the cracks on your windshield.

After ten minutes…

Remove the syringe and allow it to fill with air, and then reattach it. Press lightly on the plunger so the added pressure will push the resin further into the cracks. The plunger should lock into its uppermost indent setting when doing so. Any air bubbles that you missed earlier will not allow you to add this increased pressure from the syringe.

Instead, you will notice resin leak out from the sides of the applicator pad, making a mess. This adhesive applicator pad is not reusable, so you need to get it right the first time. Wait another 20 minutes and place a curing strip over the crack. If you have an excess resin, simply scrape it off.

Permatex 09103

Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

Pros

  • 1-1/4″ diameter cracks.
  • Precise applicator.

Cons

  • Lengthy application process.
  • Not reusable.

3 3M Windshield Repair Kit 08580 – Best Small Cracks Windshield Repair Kit

Next in our Best Windshield Repair Kit review, you might know 3M from all their adhesive products. Well, they also make a pretty decent window repair kit. Their model 08580 repair kit is made primarily to fill glass chips up to an inch in diameter. It comes with an injection tool, just like the first product we looked at.

The difference is that this one is not adjustable and needs to be assembled before using it. Fortunately, all you need to assemble the injector is a small screwdriver. With the injection tool in place, screw in the injection nozzle. Then squeeze in a few drops of resin and attach the upper part of the injection nozzle to force the resin into the crack.

Messy…

You may have to do this more than once to fill the glass chip. After it is filled, you can remove the injection tool and add a bit more resin on top of the chip. Place a curing strip on top of the chip and wait about half an hour. While filling up glass chips is reasonably straightforward, repairing long cracks is not.

That is because of how runny this resin is. When we added a few drops of the resin after using the injector, it went all over the place. This makes filling long thin cracks exceptionally tricky without creating a mess.

Keep it steady…

You can still do it, but you need to have a steady hand. We would also recommend only filling cracks less than 12-inches long for best results. That said, this is one of the most affordable windshield repair kits on the market.

3M Windshield Repair Kit 08580

Our rating:3.8 out of 5 stars (3.8 / 5)

Pros

  • Inexpensive.
  • Easy to repair chips.
  • Comes with ample resin.

Cons

  • Extremely messy.

4 Blue-star JAAGS 4 Pack – Strongest Adhesive Windshield Repair Kit

Another kit that uses a bullseye-type applicator and syringe is this product from Blue-star. From our previous experience, this sort of kit is not usually reusable.

Well, to remedy this solution, Blue-star is selling this do-it-yourself window repair kit in a pack of four. That does increase the cost of this product somewhat, but it is still pretty cheap compared to some other single-use kits.

Glass chips only…

If you have spider web-type chips or long cracks, this kit is not for you. It will only fill in smooth circular glass chips up to an inch in diameter. That said, it’s one of the best small round chips windshield repair kits on the market.

You apply it just like the previous kit we looked at earlier. Clean the damaged area of the windshield and place the applicator pad on top of it. Then push out all the air bubbles. Unlike the similar kit we previously looked at, the adhesive applicator included with this one is much more reliable.

Strong stuff…

It sticks much better to your windshield and is quite challenging to get off. This holds true for the resin pedestal as well. Everything just feels more durable. The included resin is still rather runny, though, and should not be used to repair hairline cracks.

The overall curing process is a bit shorter as well. We found that it only takes about 20 minutes to fill and repair a glass chip from start to finish.

Blue-star JAAGS 4 Pack

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Solid adhesive seal.
  • Durable pedestal.
  • Sets quicker than most.

Cons

  • Not for use on spiderweb chips.

5 Visbella – Best DIY Windshield Repair Kit

When one adhesive pad just is not enough, you should look at this kit from Visbella. This Visabella do-it-yourself kit comes with three. It comes with your typical syringe and plunger and only one pedestal, though. So, make sure not to clog it up with resin.

The perfect angle…

The pedestal provided sits at an angle that is supposed to allow the resin to spread easier. You will find an O-ring provided to help seal the connection between the adhesive pad and pedestal as well.

We found this to be a bit hit or miss, though. The syringe screws on very loosely to the pedestal and may leak resin if you apply too much pressure.

Cleaning…

Once you inject the included resin into your windshield chip or crack, you need to let it cure for thirty minutes with this kit. This is not the fastest drying resin, but it works well once set.

Most of the time, you will have a bit of a mess to clean up once the resin has cured, though. Unlike most other products, Visbella provides a small rag, making clean-up a breeze.

Visbella

Our rating:5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Pros

  • Three adhesive pads.
  • O-ring seal.
  • Cleaning cloth.

Cons

  • Occasionally leaks.

5 Permatex 81730 – Best Budget Windshield Repair Kit

If you are on a tight budget and are looking for a quick fix for small chips or cracks, then Permatex 81730 sealer is worth considering.

Permatex’s 81730 glass sealer comes in a small tube. The resin in this tube is similar to what we saw in the previous Permatex windshield repair kit we looked at. You can use it to fill cracks and chips pretty quickly. All you need is a steady hand to apply this glass sealer.

But there’s a catch…

All you get with this windshield and glass sealer is the tube of resin. You will not find an injector or cleaning blades, unfortunately. When you repair your windshield with this product, you simply squeeze out resin till the crack or chip is filled. Then let it sit for at least an hour to harden.

Without using an injector and pressure, you may not fill in the damaged area completely. Therefore, we recommend using this product as a quick fix until you can get your windshield adequately repaired.

Permatex 81730

Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

Pros

  • Inexpensive.
  • Basic.

Cons

  • No injector.
  • Does not hold up well.

7 Clearshield – Best Premium Windshield Repair Kit

These next two windshield repair kits are considered top of the line. They are pretty expensive, but if you want a professional-grade repair, they will surely do the trick.

This first professional window repair kit comes to us from Clearshield. With the Clearshield kit at home, you can repair up to two hundred windows. Therefore, this is one of the best reusable windshield repair kits you can buy.

What’s in the kit?

Once you open the included toolbox, you will notice a Dremel-type multipurpose rotary tool and an injector. In many ways, the Clearshield injector is like other ones we have seen for the most part.

Depending on the size of your glass chip, all you may need to use is the injector. The injector can handle a chip about an inch in size. For anything more extensive, you will need to use the drill. You will find a reasonably sized resin bottle and something called a pit sealer in this kit.

The pit sealer…

Allows you to cap large chips and even cracks. All you have to do is fill the chip or crack with the pit sealer, then apply a curing strip and use the included UV light. Drill a hole into the capped bit and fill it with resin. Cure it like you usually would, then scrape off any excess, and you are done.

Everything in this kit works well, but the multipurpose tool’s battery is not that great and will need to be recharged often. That being said, this is one of the best long cracks windshield repair kits currently available.

Clearshield

Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

Pros

  • Toolbox included.
  • 200 repairs.
  • 20 drill bits.

Cons

  • Flimsy drill bits.

8 Delta Kits EZ-350S Mobile Pro Plus – Most Versatile Windshield Repair Kit

Finishing this Best Kit to Repair Windshields roundup is the EZ-350S from Delta Kits. The EZ-350S can also perform up to 200 windshield repairs.

It comes with one hundred chip savers…

And curing strips as well as tape and seals. Another Dremel-style rotary tool is also provided with two different-sized bits. Delta Kits has made these bits out of carbide. So you don’t need to worry about them breaking anytime soon. They also provide pinpoint accuracy when drilling.

Thanks to the included dust blower, it is easy to remove all debris before applying the resin or pit sealer. Delta provides an ample amount of resin along with and polish as well.

Spring-loaded…

What sets this kit apart is just how precisely it fills cracks and chips. This is primarily due to the spring-loaded injector that is included. Unlike most injectors that require you to manually add pressure to the resin, this one does it for you. With the injector filled, the spring will put the optimum amount of pressure to force the resin into every crack and crevice.

After you have filled any glass chips or cracks, you can then use the provided magnification glass to inspect them. With this kit on hand and a bit of patience, this kit makes your windshield like new.

Best Windshield Repair Kit Buying Guide

Best Windshield Repair Kit Buying Guide

As you will have noticed throughout this roundup, each kit differs somewhat. Not all kits are made for fixing hairline cracks, for example. Some might not be able to fix spider web types of chips, either.

Small Single-Use Windshield Repair Kits…

Can usually only fix glass chips up to an inch or inch and a half in diameter. These windshield repair kits are easy to use, but results can vary drastically from one repair to another.

More expensive repair kits will fix large chips even if they have spiderwebbed out. These professional-level kits include pit sealers and drills, allowing you to cap off any window damage and then seal it.

One thing that all kits have in common…

They all use resin. To apply this resin, you will usually find injectors included with your repair kit. An injector simply allows you to insert the resin precisely. They also add a bit of pressure to the damaged section in order for the resin to spread to every nook and cranny.

Cheaper windshield repair kits will typically come with a plastic injector with suction cup feet. Professional kits will come with injectors made from metal that are much more durable, though.

Whenever you repair a chip or crack in your windshield…

You will need to let this resin cure completely. Manufacturers will provide you with curing strips you will place over the wet resin for this to occur. You can expect to wait anywhere from ten to thirty minutes for the resin to fully cure. The curing process takes place when the resin is placed under UV light.

Typically, all you need to do is place your vehicle in the sun for this to happen. If it is a cloudy day, the curing process can take much longer. Some kits also come with a portable UV light allowing you to fix your windshield in your garage. These small UV lights will also cure the resin much more quickly than just placing your car in the sun.

Why do you need a windshield repair kit?

Getting a crack or chip in your windshield is something that is going to happen from time to time. It is best to be prepared for this in advance. Driving with a cracked windshield can be dangerous. A small crack or chip can spread and affect the integrity of the entire windshield.

Replacing a windshield can cost you hundreds of dollars. While not all repair kits can fix larger chips or cracks, they can usually take care of the smaller ones.

That is why we would recommend spending extra and getting a windshield repair that will last. A kit that can cover all types of chips and cracks will save you money down the road.
